Joe Cole makes his first competitive start for England in the World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland. Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has handed Cole the key role on the left side of midfield for the Old Trafford match. Cole takes the Chelsea contingent in the team to three with John Terry and Frank Lampard also starting. Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen will lead the line and Eriksson has given recalled striker Emile Heskey a place on the bench alongside Jermain Defoe. Cole has 19 caps to his name but has started only two other matches for his country. But Eriksson has been impressed with Chelsea's in-form 23-year-old and gives him the nod ahead of Stewart Downing. He said: 'He seems like a different player and very mature in his way of playing. He's a huge talent and has been doing very well for us.' England: Robinson; Neville, A Cole, Terry, Ferdinand; Beckham (capt), Lampard, J Cole, Gerrard; Rooney, Owen. Subs: James, Carragher, King, Dyer, Hargreaves, Heskey, Defoe. (from BBC website) |
