I couldn't listen to 'heavy rock' music. If I had it on radio in my room so I could just barely hear it my mum used to find out. Could hear a pin drop from 40 yards!

My nephew was bought one of those little wooden dogs that you pull along on a string, when he was 2 or 3, for his birthday. This was in around 1980 ish. My father-in-law turned up to give his present, saw the dog and immediately cut the sring off saying 'thats dangerous that, he'll strangle himself'! Needless to say my nephew promptly bawled his eyes out. He was right I suppose but at the time it certainly wasn't funny! Vikki xx

Well of course everything was disapproved of but what I particularly remember is every meal being served with 'Eat it nicely.' If I eat in a restaurant now there always seems to be something missing when the waiter or especially the waitress doesn't say it.

My Mum had three of us to look after when Dad was in the Army during world war 2, as well as working on munitions. She did a wonderful job of it but was she strict ! we all had to sit down together for meals, wash our hands before doing so, knife in right hand fork in the left, no elbows on the table, and when finished our meal we had to say 'can I leave the table please? the reply would be 'Yes! and take your plate out ' On visiting relatives we were inspected, and given orders to say 'please and thank you, and only speak when spoken to . To put it bluntly, to be seen and not heard ! It didn't do us any harm though ! Look what kids do today ! watching TV with their meal on their knees ? and as for eating in the street !!!! I am lost for words ? so I had better get off my soapbox and shut up ! As my daughters says ' It's 2005 now Dad !

The only thing my lovely Dad outlawed was bad manners, but my Mum basically outlawed just two things - everything I said and everything I did. Maid Marian
