Hi Lizz Tescos had a stand of medical help books called the Family Doctor Series - published in association with the British Medical Association. Its just called 'Understanding Thyroid Disorders'. The Doctor did suggest at one point that I go to the Library and ask if they had any books about it and research the condition myself, so that might be worth a try...........depends how well stocked your library is though I suppose! I'm glad you are going to go back to him VIV. I wasted my degree as by the time I finished I was worn out and at an all time low.........no self confidence because of fat and couldn't retain information well enough to hold down a decent job. Don't end up like me .......... go stamp you feet til they listen!!!!!!!! Mandy

My sister had an underactive thyroid and she was mis-diagnosed - went on for years! She finally had treatment with radioactive iodine, this tipped the thyroid the other way (quite common) and she has to take medication daily to correct it. Her symptoms improved a lot though. Keep on at GPs because this is often mis-diagnosed, or worse, dismissed.

Mandy Report 20 May 2005 23:07

Apparently people are often diagnosed because their outer eyebrows have thinned or disappeared...............you think your doctor is being clever diagnosing your symptoms but really he's looking at your eyebrows!! LOL Mandy

Mandy, omg i thought i was the only one without eyebrows, lol Lizz x

How often are they checking your bloods VIV? Have you told the GP how much it is getting you down? It would be easier for him to treat you for the thyroid than for depression! Mandy

I'm exactly the same Lizz. My GP kept my level at 50 for years and I was getting fatter and fatter and more tired (started doing a degree at the time so struggled) An excellent locum was at our surgery for a few months and he increased me to 100 but left before it was sorted properly. I was promised an appointment with the Specialist but it never happened, even though my GP sang his praises and said how brilliant he is! Still fat, still tired, still no energy or eyebrows!!!!!!!!!!!

Mandy, The specialist is the one who said no to thyroxine... my GP wanted to put me on a very low dose....that's apparently what they do abroard but he was told not to. Viv

Mandy, wish that were true, still haven`t got my levels sorted yet. Having bloods done every 6months.

Mandy Report 20 May 2005 22:53

Apparently daughters of under active thyroid suffferers can be at risk from diabetes. It can also be related to diet and stress triggers. They are not really sure what happens to cause it, aside form the the specific illnesses linked to it.

Hi Marion, How are you? I saw an article the other day and it said that this condition could be heredity and that more and more children are being diagniosed with it. Lizz x

Mandy

Mandy Report 20 May 2005 22:50

LOL Lizz...............mine are Grey moments, everything is a fog!!! Viv If thats the reason that is disgusting...........can you ask them for a second opinion and try to get referred to a specialist? The Specialist could get your levels right.........different GPs read the blood test results differently.........and you would feel a lot better within months.......or so I've been told.

I had been having symptoms of an overactive thyroid for about 6months, although i didn't know what it was at the time, whenever i went to the doctors, they more or less just told me i was stressed because i had 2 young children at the time, finally i found a doctor who told me what it was right away before he even sent me for a blood test.

VIVinHERTS

VIVinHERTS Report 20 May 2005 22:45

My sister is also affected....hers has stopped working and she's dependant on thyroxine. She doesn't have a goitre like me though. viv

I was the opposite way round...........divorce and two close berevements within 4 months and started to pile on weight........started to worry it was a tumour or something (got the lump in the throat too). Seemed strange to be relieved when it was diagnosed!! Mandy
