I stayed with my other two dogs, Beau (aged 16) and Connie (few weeks short of 16). I used to have all three of them together and then just Lucy. I couldnt stay. I hate remembering the look of the other two as they passed away. I want to try to remember Lucy as full of life, running and bouncing around the garden. (I looked round then as I swore I heard her come in here - this will take a long time to get over). So I feel guilty I didnt stay with her but I didnt want her to feel my upset. Husband cuddled her on the sofa and then broke his heart after vet checked her and said she had gone. I dont understand why there are so many cruel people in the world. I honestly think if anyone hurts an animal they should receive the same punishment as hurting a human.

Sorry to hear of your loss. We lost our dear siamese Sophie in March she was 20 years old, having lost her sister Cassie the year before. Someone emailed me the poem you posted. It's beautiful. Just take comfort in the thought that she loved you and you loved her and gave her a great home. Linda x

We were close to tears in the vets a few years ago when we had to have our rabbit, Scamp, put down - and he just lived in the garden! I couldn't stay with him when he had the injection, left it to my (stronger) other half! allow yourself to grieve.... Lily (no NOT the dog referred to on this thread!)

Thanks for your support guys. I cant believe it really. I hated making that decision but she has been poorly for nearly a year and had 4 fits during last night - it is so pitiful to see her and on top of that she has had problems with her stomach last couple of weeks. Absolutely broken hearted. I still keep looking down at my feet as she always lays there when Im on the pc. And she has slept on my bed for the past year - I dont know what I shall do without her. I know I have to get this into perspective, but she was such a dear little soul and such a good friend. I keep looking out the window at the rain then realise I dont have to put her little coat on to take her for a walk. Why cant people be like dogs. You get what you see and they love you whoever, whatever you are.

Hi TC So sorry to hear about your beloved pet. I read that poem last year when our guinea pigs died & I cried buckets. Pets are so innocent & trusting & give unconditional love to their owners. Shame some humans can't learn a thing or two from them. Your dog was part of your family i'm sure. 16 years is a long time to have loved an animal like you did. I have sent you a message, thanks for your support too, I do appreciate it. Best wishes & a big hug, Joan.

My heart goes out to you, know only to well the heartbreak in losing a beloved pal.I cried buckets when our beloved PUSs Puss died aged 18. We had kept him going for over three years with medication for over active thyroid but his kidneys finally gave up. the only consolation i had was that the vet said he would have gone sooner if not for our dedicated care. A poem for all who have lost a loved one: Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: They miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together... Author of this masterpiece: Paul C. Dahm

Today I had to have my dear little dog put to sleep. It was Lucy's 16th birthday and I miss her so very very much. For those of you who have lost a pet, I found this poem and hope it will be of some comfort to you as it was to me.
