Purple Putnia, thank your son on my behalf for showing this poor man some kindness, and he was right not to invite him into his home. the sheer fact he took the time to chat even for a short time with this man, would have been something, your son may have been the only person who had actually spoken to this man all day.think about it, how many times have any of us walked past someone like this man and not uttered a word to them, oh we may have put a few coins down , but actually spoke to them? Well done your son. Shirley getting carried away again. |

As I was reading this my son rang me as he was walking home from a night out. Strangely.I paused at the message from Shirley. He was quite upset as he had just seen a man sitting in the street, not begging but being given money by some people passing by. My son recognised the man as his old Kung Fu teacher of some years ago, a man obviously used to the discipline of Kung Fu and highly qualified in the art. He told my son he had split with his girlfriend and had become dependent on alcohol so had nowhere to live having lost his home and his job. He is 40 years old. He is apparently meeting with his ex tomorrow and as someone had given him £10 on Thursday he had had a haircut and bought some clothes from Primark to try and sort himself out to meet with the lady. Although my son is far from well off, he also gave his old tutor £10 to get anything else he needed for the meet. My lad told me he almost asked him back to his flat for the night so he didn't have to sleep on the streets but didn't and now regretted it. I am glad he didn't get that involved as he has enough problems of his own to sort out but so glad I have a compassionate son. As you say, there are always people worse off that us, however hard done by we feel sometimes. Bless you all. |

Dave, Just had 13 days in hospital. My ward consisted of two people in great pain who had to have everything done for them and were plainly not going to recover; A 91 year old who had just lost his wife after 67 years and said that he didn,t want to get better; A 90 year old who never stopped ranting in a loud voice; and a wanderer, who would do nothing the nurses told him. My observation is that it is a strange god we worship. Genuine thought, but hope it doesn,t offend anybody - each and everyone of them was someones bonny, bouncing baby at one time, full of hope and expectations....... happy days |

Yes Dave. the saying count your blessings comes to mind. There is always someone worse off. A saying that my Mum and Dad used to say comes to mind. 'Worse things happen at sea.' We all tend to get wrapped up in our own problems and forget just how lucky we are. Germaine x |

Last July My other half had to have his arm amputated as a result of a road traffic accident. 'Oh Poor thing' is the stock reaction. No .He is the lucky thing. It was the girl that lost HER partner in the same RTA FOREVER, that is the poor thing- he only lost a limb. I consider that makes me very VERY lucky, because they both could have so easily died. |

I see a lot of the things you mentioned in my job, like the young man who came to stay at the centre who had lost his wife to breast cancer, he came in with his 7yr old son, their house was being sold only 6 months after his wifes death, because his father inlaw wanted the deposit money back that he had loaned his daughter before her death. Then there was the 32yr old female, who had a drink problem, after a few months of treating her with kindness and respect she was able to tell me she was 1 of 5 children and had been sexually abused by her father since the age of 8 , her mother knew this and never did anything about it,which she found hard to understand. she had never been able to tell anyone about this or nobody ever gave her the time of day, so she had the oppotunity to tell somebody. So yes Dave you are so right, and next time any of you see a person sitting in a shop door way, or a known alcoholic in the street ,remember they may have a very sad reason for being that way, then count your blessings. ( MY LIST IS ENDLESS.) sHIRLEY |

thats so true dave, thank you! i can only add to that by putting this song, the lyrics are really special to me,and i would like to share them. There comes a time when we heed a certain call When the world must come together as one There are people dying Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life The greatest gift of all We can't go on pretending day by day That someone, somewhere will soon make a change We're all a part of God's great big family And the truth, you know love is all we need We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So let's start giving There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me Well, send 'em your heart So they know that someone cares And their lives will be stronger and free As God has shown us By turning stone to bread And so we all must lend a helping hand We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So let's start giving There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me When you're down and out And there seems no hope at all But if you just believe There's no way we can fall Well, well, well, let's realize That a change can only come When we stand together as one We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So let's start giving There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So let's start giving There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So let's start giving There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day Just you and me |

Something I found which made me think about when we feel sorry for ourself there is always someone worse. Be Thankful We all have a tendency to, sometimes, think That there's no one worse off than us; When the weight of our troubles feel too heavy to bear And our hopes seem to all turn to rust. But, consider the Mother who has just lost a child Or the Father who is terminally ill, The sister and brother who've just been informed Their parents have tragically been killed ... The single Mom who struggles to raise kids on her own After being beaten and abused by her spouse, Now living in a one bedroom apartment With no dream of ever owning a house. Would you care to trade places with the man in the alley, Who is rummaging for something to eat, With the rain or the snow soaking into his skin And frostbite tearing into his feet ... A little girl who sits sobbing in a clinic While the parents are stricken with grief, Awaiting the treatment of chemo ~ Which has not given any hope or relief? Perhaps, you would like to sit next to your loved one As they lay silent and unable to speak, Knowing that they're breathing the last breath of life; Praying for an end to the pain which they seek. The next time you choose to feel sorry for yourself, Just know that it could be far worse. Don't trade your problems with anyone else. You could end up in a hearse!
