Hi it's Pam again, I've had lots of success, but am still trying to track down my grandfather William(John)(Robert)Poole. I am sure that I have him at 1881 and 1901, but need to know his birth. There are several possibles, but the latest one I have a feeling about, the only problem is that his birthplace is S Stoneham, which I can't find on any map- does anyone know where this is or used to be. Hampshire would be ideal, but I will accept the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Pam

What does it say exactly for birthplace in 1881 and 1901? Is there any discrepancy? nell

Thanx for the replies, he was born circa 1863/64, allegedly in Southampton, so Hampshire, father John Poole - gardener according to his marriage cert, hence 1881, with the Army in RIchmond, Yorks, then disappears until back in Richmond in 1901 for my fathers' birth. So I guess my hunch could be right. Cheers Pam

Put West End Museum hampshire into Google and you will find lots of info ont hat area. i was there last weekend, super little museum as someone has said there is a list of tithes on there with names against plot numbers for 1845. south stoneham covered a fairly large area and included places such as west end, horton heath Fairoak, Shamblehurst to Botley. Do you know which area your elatives came from? Mine came from Shamblehurst, Horton heath, bitterne and Botley. There is also a list for the 1881 Workhouse in the area. regards ann Glos

Central Southampton would have ' Southampton' as registration district but South Stoneham is still virtually Southampton, - just not city centre. Southampton..... could also refer to the county name, that we now call Hampshire.

Thanx again and I did get the museum up on the google. As to where they were born I have no idea, the only hint I have is that my grandfather William John Poole was in Richmond in the Army in 1881 and gives his birth place as Southampton. On his marriage cert he gives his fathers name as John Poole occupation gardener. Pam
