Everyone one should take a look at the TERMS & CONDITIONS of sites like Rootsweb before you submit your tree. When you post your work on this site you have granted them permission to use it on their other corporate owned sites as well as the right to 'sell' it to other like sites.....and you are bound by the TERMS & CONDITIONS of those other sites. Ancestery and LDS, for instance, in their terms and conditions, state they can alter, sell, charge others, etc....and although (at least on Rootsweb) they claim you are the owner of the tree, they now have the right to post it anywhere and you have no way removing your tree from some of the sites they post/sell to. Although I have found trees on the sites mentioned above that have been invaluable to my research, I personally, wouldn't allow anyone the right to do what they want with my work.....I prefer complete control on what I choose to share with others, like here on GR, where I can allow access or not, or to allow my work on the site or the right to remove it if I wish. My point, to make sure that you read the terms and conditions where ever you decide to post your tree and that you understand the ramifications when you do. Judy :) |
