Lonely? Not really. I had anything but a regular childhood, and learnt to enjoy my own company from an early age. I often feel a sense of intrusion if there are too many people around in my space, and are easily irritated with unnecessary chit-chat. But I can talk till the cows come home with the right company. I feel comfortable knowing peeps are there in the background, but prefer to be left to my own devices most of the time. Bryan.....you men are such babies. LOL!

i'me a bit of a loner at home,at work,i'me so busy that time goes by quickly, but sometimes i wish i had someone to share the good times, and like tonight, the bad times,as i have a bad hand, and could do with someone just putting their hand on my shoulders, and saying 'you men,are such babies' :o) bryan.

I think we can all feel like that from time to time. I'm happy with my family but can feel isolated at work and waiting outside school it can all be so clichey (don't know how to spell that). Jacquie XXX

When I was a child I spent years in hospital (5th and 6th birthdays in Guys) and I learned to cope with being left to my own devices for most of the time and did not welcome the attentions of staff as it usually meant pain. So I grew up fairly detached and horribly self-sufficient. Sometimes I long for solitude. It says in my personality profile 'likes people but does not need them' len

I am sitting feeling exactly that way. I have a lovely husband but when he isi'nt around I see no one. Its very difficult to get involved in others lives when you are older and everyone seems to have their lives established already. i have invited my neighbour in for a coffee and just get, thanks I will sometime but thats all. I have loads of hobbies and keep busy but as many of you have said just to have a chat occasionally would be so good.

Yes I have felt lonely...many a time, even though I have my lovely Son, have found my Cousins, adopted Mum and Half Sister. My mates are few and far between, since waking to the fact that I was only their friend when they wanted support or something done, but when I needed help...they suddenly weren't around. Boyfriends were like that too.... I'm older and wiser now and although my confidence felt shot to pieces, I refuse to let it get me down anymore and besides, I've made some great company through the internet :-)

I think everyone at some time feels isolated and alone during their lifetime... me included. I love company, but also being by myself, as I am at this moment. I have my family who often pop in, and things to do, like my tree, msn, and other hobbies... but at the end of the day... I like peace, and my own company too. I am content> Anne :)))

I know what you mean,Christine. But it's quite likely that there's someone living near you who's feeling exactly the same. It could just be a case of linking up with each other.......

I'm sure a lot of you are right when you mention lack of confidence and insecurites being behind the feeling of lonliness that comes over somone when they are in a large group of people It is something I have learned to cope with, reasonably successfully. People always seem to think I am cool, calm and collected, when deep inside I am a mass of insecurities. Thank you all for sharing your feelings Take care Dee x

Chimes Report 24 Jul 2005 16:43

I feel like that often, like you say, even in a crowded room, perhaps in insecurity?
