In my extensive experience of socialising (!) I would say that having a good time does not depend upon alcohol, or nice food, or a pleasant ambience in a restaurant/pub/bowling alley/whatever it depends on your frame of mind and the company. Good company can create a fantastic time in the most awful circumstances. I remember having a ghastly meal - food either raw or burnt, sloppy service, incorrect bill etc - but it was a laugh because I was with my college friends. We hadn't anything stronger than juice to drink and we had coffee in another place as we couldn't face it in the naff restaurant we were in. A little alcohol does relax a bit and help when in a new situation, as well as giving you something to do with your hand, but too much can ruin things. As a friend of mine once said the morning after the night before, 'waking up and not remembering what you did the night before is preferable to waking up and remembering EXACTLY what you did!' nell |

I enjoy a drink but, as others have said, I can enjoy myself just as well without one. I must disagree with you Jim about alcohol causing more problems that Drugs. I work in a Drug Rehabilitation Centre and I see the effects every day - sometimes with devastating consequences! Having said that, my father was an alcoholic and he was violent towards my mother at times when I was a child. Lynne |

My mother's problem is blighting our whole family's life. I despise the weakness. |

Like a lot of things, alcohol is fine in moderation. It's when it's used to excess that problems arise...domestic violence, anti-social behaviour etc. |

I do have one or two drinks but can have an equally good time without a drink. Hubby only ever has one drink if he is driving and always enjoys himself. neither my sister or friend drink and they have a good time also so I don't think you need alcohol to enjoy yourself, it is a state of mind. Alcohol can cause more problems than it solves. Ann Glos |

I don't drink because I find drunks boring - I have much more fun sober. The blackmail pays the rent. |

If we didn't have Alcohol the world would be a better place. Alcohol causes more trouble than all the other Drugs put together, and ruins more lives. |

I do know or have known people who don't and socialise just fine and if they're fine with that then that's fine with me. |

I don't drink it, so I can't say I have a better time with it. I've never had a bad night out though. It is funny to watch people around me getting drunk and falling over lol |
