A street has probably got less 'Holes'in it than a Road,at least that applies around where I live.Hal. |

My previous house was in an avenue, a tree-lined road, street, way, lane, close, etc. Mike |

Bryan I always thought a Mews House was one that was in a courtyard over a stable, or a modern one over a garage. The previous answer was from a dictionary. David |

Mews. A stable or set of stables in London where the Royal horses were kept; so called because built on the site formerley occupied by the 'mews' or cages of the royal hawks. Hence any city stable, or a courtyard around which stables are located. Hope that helps Bryan. David |

Cheers for all your replies, everyone. I think I know my 'Way' now, and will be 'Streets' ahead and shan't go down this 'Road' again. Anna x |

I don't know if this helps Street: A public way with buildings on one or both sides in a city town or village....... Road: A strip of land set apart for passage , public or private, especially for vehicles, the track over which conveyances of any kind, persons and animals pass from place to place; a highway. There are no roads in the City of London, mainly streets. Farringdon Street becomes Farringdon Road as it leaves the City. David |

For Nana Anna Yes a close is a form of street ie a closed one. Alan. Roman wording Street applied to the major arterial roads like Watling Street, Ermine Street, but the Fosse way was a major road. In Italy the Via Appenina was the Appenine Way and that went from/to major towns. Best leave the Romans out of it and just look at the present. Sorry folks - here endeth the lesson. :-) :-) Keith |
