Davo if you think the Sheffield accent is hard to understand you should hear Barnsley's! I stopped to ask for directions there and couldn't understand a word said to me! Apologies to any Barnsley peeps!

Goodnight Terrence. Did you know that the tune for Ilkley Moor was originally written for 'While Shephers watched their flocks by night'? It fits well Anne

Hippo I had that on an LP of cowboy music many years ago. My eldest daughter as a baby, wouln't go to sleep unless something from that was playing. Best ones fo the purpose were 'I ride an old paint.' and 'Gid along little doggies.' the latter had lines 'With a ten dollar horse and a 40 dollar saddle I'm going punchin' Texas cattle' . She now has a sidesaddle which cost a lot more that $40, but no horse. David

Here's the Jesse James one I remember from school! Jesse James was a lad who killed many a man He robbed the Glendale train; He stole from the rich and he gave to the poor He'd a hand and a heart and a brain. Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life, Three children, they were brave; But that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard Has laid poor Jesse in his grave. It was Robert Ford, that dirty little coward; I wonder how he does feel For he ate of Jesse's bread and he slept in Jesse's bed Then laid poor Jesse in his grave. Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life, Three children, they were brave; But that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard Has laid poor Jesse in his grave. Jesse was a man, a friend to the poor He never would see a man suffer pain, And with his brother Frank he robbed the Chicago bank, And stopped the Glendale train. Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life, Three children, they were brave; But that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard Has laid poor Jesse in his grave. It was his brother Frank that robbed the Gallatin bank, And carried the money from the town; It was in this very place that they had a little race, For they shot Captain Sheets to the ground. Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life, Three children, they were brave; But that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard Has laid poor Jesse in his grave. They went to the crossing not very far from there, And there they did the same; With the agent on his knees, he delivered up the keys To the outlaws, Frank and Jesse James. Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life, Three children, they were brave; But that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard Has laid poor Jesse in his grave. It was on Saturday night, Jesse was at home Talking with his family brave, Robert Ford came along like a thief in the night And laid poor Jesse in his grave. Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life, Three children, they were brave; But that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard Has laid poor Jesse in his grave. The people held their breath When they heard of Jesse's death And wondered how he ever came to die. It was one of the gang called little Robert Ford He shot poor Jesse on the sly. Poor Jesse had a wife to mourn for his life, Three children, they were brave; But that dirty little coward that shot Mr. Howard Has laid poor Jesse in his grave.

My grandfather's clock was the best ever made By the Timex company It worked under water so perfectly And still made a ticking sound Which my grandfather tried Only this afternoon And that's how the old man drowned. Alan Sherman

Buttercup, Never thought of that - it depends where you're from!! My music teacher used to get us singing loads of old songs! I remember one about the Titanic and one about Jesse James - that was in the 1970's!! P.S Terence I know what you mean about well played brass instruments they do sound very very moving.

Terence do you remember My Grandfather's clock? My Grandfather’s clock was too tall for the shelf So it stood 90 years on the floor. It was taller by half than the old man himself And it weighed not a pennyweight more. It was bought in the morn of the day he was born And was always his treasure and pride. But it stopped---short! ---never to go again--- When the old man died! That one sounded very 'Yorkshire' because of the trumpet accompanaying (spelling mistake!)it.
