I have a couple of gamekeepers on both sides. Also a butcher who then changed and became a greengrocer like the rest of the family. Oh and the publicans shame I wasn't around at the time might of got free booze. Gamekeepers were in Essex, Kent , Cambridgeshire and the butchers/greengrocers were Hertfordshire and Essex

Wouldn't suggest people did as I think dogs should eat meat as well (as I said on my earlier thread Paul), I also stated cats eat meat. Unlike a cat, dogs are actually omnivores, not true carnivores. This means that they can be healthy without eating meat, but you must make sure your dog is getting enough protein and all the other nutrients he needs. Steps: 1. Buy a natural health book for dogs or, better yet, one that specializes in vegetarian diets. Follow the diet given. 2. Make sure your dog is getting enough of all the amino acids he needs and vitamin B-12. For this reason it's important to follow a prescribed diet. 3. Speak to your vet about testing your dog's urine periodically. You can do it at home very simply, and there are products on the market for this purpose. A vegetarian diet can make a dog's urine more alkaline; this may predispose them to urinary tract infections. 4. Give your dog cranberry capsules if the urine is too alkaline. This will make it more acidic and help prevent urinary tract infections. 5. Buy a prepared, high-quality vegetarian dog food. This is a good alternative if you're unsure what to feed your dog or don't have time to properly prepare a homemade meal. 6. Supplement with veggie dog treats and biscuits. These are available at most health food or pet stores. 7. Find a veterinarian who supports your decision and who is knowledgeable about vegetarian diets. P.S We are omnivores too but can live without animal products if we are careful.

Some people say that a dog can be vegetarian, I don't see how to be honest. They're omnivouris by nature, they're ancestors (Wolves) had to eat meat to stay alive, I cant see why a dog would be any different. A cat cannot go without animal proteins, and fats, it would eat its litter mates, its own legs, or die!

I do! My Great Great Grandfather was a gamekeeper, as was his father. Rumor has it that GG Grandfather was the gamekeeper at Studley Castle, something I have still to delve into. Deb

You can let dogs be veggies at a push but not cats. Most dog owners seem to still buy those tins but the cereals with a bit of fish/chicken added are healthier as dogs are omnivores.

Yuletide Does that apply if you feed your animals dried food? Joy

I had to walk past a Slaughterhouse on the way to school everyday and the smell in Summertime was unbelieveable. We thought it was great fun when the animals used to escape and run riot in the school field until the man from the slaughterhouse turned up to catch it. joy

I just wonder if the people that worked in these trades had any social problems or had any nightmares?

As long as people and their pets eat meat animals will be slaughtered and their by products used! Just think how much horse meat a domestic doggie and moggie will chomp through in a year.

Louise Not a very nice idea I agree. I think what we have to remember though is that back then they had very little and so they tended not to waste anything they could use. Most of the thick cloth for Winter was very expensive and if you could get Moleskin trousers in Winter so much the better. They're very warm, apparently. Joy

My hubby's mate worked in a slaughter house before he started his own business. I don't know how he coped with it.

Joy, i think that sounds about right but i kinda think maybe they did eat what was left too, especially if you werent that well off. Louise it makes me think yuk too lol
