Both my brother and me have felt advent calenders that our mother always fill with love, care and chocolate.

Louise, sounds unorthodox but certainly innovative lol

Hi Andy, We don't buy the cardboard ones instead we have a fabric santa in a hot air balloon basket that has 25 pockets on the attached balloon. We fill a pocket every day with sweets or lollies and put in the occasional small toy every now and then. The kids love it and don't binge on the entire calender in one go as they do with the bought ones. It's great fun finding little things to put in the pockets and makes the wait for Christmas less boring for the kids. Louise

Jess, yep, that's right and it used to have a double door, or a bigger one than the others. The fact it had a bigger door used to have a curious five year old me wanting to take a peek in advance rather than do the boring old wait until Christmas Eve, although I don't think I went ahead and opened it as I reluctantly realised it did defeat the object somewhat. I'm 30, but I think my brother (five years younger than me) would remember receiving one. June, and to you too. :) Plan was to go away to Ireland for the New Year, but my brother wasn't able to get the time off he wanted, so will make do with spending a few days with him down in Kent. Will still be a laugh though.

Hi Andy, You might know they are Big business now, I think every chocolate company has jumped on the band wagon also any other company that has managed to sell their goods this way. Very few have any connections with religion though. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New year Andy. I expect you will be celebrating in your usual style! Love June xx

I remember the basic Advent calendars where you open the door, and there would be a scene relating to Christmas (Three Kings, Angels etc) and as a kid, there was some satisfaction to be had from just guessing what the pic was behind the door. Oddly enough, I was never that fond of the ones with a bit of bland-tasting chocolate hidden inside lol.

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but having not had one for as long as I care to remember and not really noticing whether shops are stocking them, it had me briefly wondering whether they were a relic of the past or just me being unobservant!
