When my eldest was tiny I asked my parents what they wanted to be called. My mother said 'Gran' and my father said 'tell her grandfather and we'll see what a childish mess she makes of it.' Well, she said grandfather without batting an eyelid. Then when she was a little older she said one day, 'If he's grandfather, she must be grandmother' and the two, grandmother and grandfather, stuck. Grandmother died many years ago but all my children still call my father 'grandfather'. As a great-grandparent he's Gramps. I didn't want to be called Gran - felt I was far too young :-) - and got the grandchildren to cal me Mimi (french I think?). Now my adult step-daughter calles me Mimi too. When I remarried and my new husband was asked what he would like my grandchildren to call him he suggested Bigpop and that is what his grandchildren call him now as well. |

My grandaughter in Norway calls me Nanny, but if I was living there I would be called Famor (fathers mother) once when I was over there and introduced to her teacher, she thought I was a nanny who looked after children. My first husband,[real grandad] has been Grandad in NZ but I guess from next week he'll just be Grandad. Eldest grandson is the only one who knew my lovely man & he called him Poppa. Vivienne |

I am not a grandmother ... yet. My son calls my mum grannie. He is very amused that my grannie is my mum's mum, so that mummy's grannie is the same as grannie's mummy! He invented names for my in-laws, which were his way of saying Grandma and Grandpa, and although they are now sadly no longer with us, we call them Marna and Parder. nell |
