some police and MPs are calling for DNA to be taken from all newborn babies. this is to act as either a deterrent later in life or to help catch crims later on. personally i think im in favour. what do you think? good idea or more big brother tactics? paul...

No. The government knows enough about me as it is already. Also, use of DNA is being taken far too far - fair enough to use it in crime solving and to treat or eradicate illnesses but if DNA is taken at birth, it won't be long before people are seriously suggesting altering some of the things that make us individual....um...do I sound paranoid lol

I agree too I think it will be that way in the future anyway. Maybe it's a bit like the too intrusive Big Brother stuff but eventually like everything else we will lose the power to object as it will be brought in with or without our consent. Pat x

Paul, these sort of statements i find Hypocritical, it was only a month ago i read that Hospitals were stopping people looking over babies in there cribs after birth as it was an invasion of privacy, Human rights. So to be honest i don't think PC brigade will allow it to happen.

I'm not averse to the idea of DNA databanks. I think they could be very useful in combating disease, proving blood relationship,and identifying criminals. Like most systems, there are flaws, so the current debate over the Police holding DNA records of people innocent of any crime possiby has some merit, but I'm not qualified to judge whether these samples should be held or not. My personal feeling is that it's a good idea, and if mine is ever wanted, I'd agree to give it. CB >|<

thanks for replying folks, some valid mature arguments for both sides. i personally would happily give mine and wouldnt object to my children having theirs taken. if it stops a handful of people suffering injustices then its a good thing in my opinion. paul..

Paul, the idea certainly has it's favourable merits per se, but there are always going to be those to take and use what they want for their own unsavoury and evil uses. The potential for abuse (both legal and illegal) of DNA isn't worth the risk. Would any storage facility be able to offer the safety and security, -staff as well as the housing itself- needed to undertake such a monumental task? I personally don't have that much faith in the powers that be. Rebs x

I am in favour of this but one question what about the children that are not born in this country and are brought over here . How do you get around that one ? Cath

If it's use is restricted to serious matters, maybe yes. On the other hand, if twenty years later you drop an icecream wrapper, chewing gum or a fag end, a DNA check would bring a knock on the door and a fine! Good money-raising possibilities for the Government?
