For half a century my hub has called me tub. I could never be called twiggy. If talking to other people he refers to me as the old crow because the Huia was a member of the wattled crow family. My dad always called me wee one to the day he died, even though I was the biggest of 4, and I dont just mean in height. |

Thank you for the responses regarding Fanny. I had forgotten an amusing tale from my childhood - before I began school my parents called me Fifi on occasion and I had a friend, Louise, known as Lou-Lou. When we were about 4 my mother took us to the beach for the afternoon. At home time, she called out, 'Fifi, Lou-Lou, time to go!' An elderly man fell about laughing and explained to my mother that he expected two toy french poodles to come running up, not two little girls. :-) As for what my little brothers and sister tried to make out of Felicity - how's about Fitty, Fisty and Fatility!! Fortunately their little tongues got the hang of things eventually and none of those versions stuck. |

I too have heard of Fanny Fannackerpan. Over the years, I have been skinny Lizzie, Passionflower (don't ask) Flossie, Kitten, Bebe (when my little brother couldn't say my name),Liza, Leeza, Lilibet, and probably more that I can't recall or didn't know about. Always knew if I was in trouble at home, my full name would be enunciated very carefully : Elizabeth. |

Felicity I have heard of Fananne Fernackapan from my childhood. I've looked it up on Google but no one seems to have a definite answer for it's use. When I was young I used to blush when my Grandmother called me Jane Ann Teacake !! Did she make it up or was it because I liked ( and still do ) teacakes LoL Felicity is a lovely name. Mau x |

I really like my name so I don't take kindly to nicknames. People have tried to call me Fliss and my ex refused to call me anything else but that and I was stupid(?) enough to let him get away with it, but I'm so glad that no-one calls me that now. My ex-mother-in-law used to refer to me as Fanny Fernackapan. I've no idea where she got that from and she never called me that to my face. Does anyone heard that name? She said she hadn't invented it but didn't know where she'd heard it. |

Not now but as a schoolboy I was called 'carrots'. It was not so much the colour of my hair as its shape reminded people of the foliage.. Len |

I never really had a nickname at school, just the usual 'Smiffy' type. A few years ago, I was playing football with the lads at work, and one of them, trying to 'encourage me' shouted something along the lines of 'oi chunks, move your a*se'. The name chunks kind of stuck, and although it was meant as a derogative thing, I didn't mind it that much. Since then its changed (online at least) from chunks, to chunky, and now to cheeky... In the 60's used to be called Twiggy, blond, tall, slim, leggy, stylish, look at me now, old, fat, frumpy, where did it all go. Nevermind have 2 stylish daughers, 1 good looking son, 2 beautifull grandchildren, that's what it's all about. Carol |

My father calls me Bizzie Lizzie, because I keep moving furniture like his grandmother Elizabeth. My nan use to call me Fan Ann - don't know why but my little cousin got called it too. Lunar is a nickname I got last time Britain had a full solar eclipse. My brother had a summer school class on an enviromental theme, and everyone had to have an eco name. As I helped out I needed one too, but went overboard with Lunar-Aqua-Solar-Terra, so it got shortened to Lunar and it's stuck. |

I guess the above is a sort of nickname I got here on the boards (long story but blame BC!). I once was called 'mouse' at a kind of summer school thing (it was a week at Easter) I went to once for classics. Also, my sister called me Saz for a while, which I hated. Apart from that though... not really had a proper nickname as such! |

Thanks folks. Some very amusing names. The cruellest ones are nearly all from school-days aren't they? Was reading a newspaper article this morning about nicknames and their origins. They were ekenames, an extra name, then over time it changed from 'an ekename' to a nickname. i laughed at the part where it said in ancient Egypt there are records of people being called Red,Baldy,Lazy and Ape. Usually given as an affection by your friends and family or to describe a famous person, ie Elvis(the pelvis) The Iron Lady ( Margaret Thatcher) Anne Widdecombe ( Doris Karloff) How many more can you think of? Mau xx :0)) |

my husbands family call him 'bat n ball', cockney slang for ' paul'. i call him 'batty' coz he's a nutcase. my nickname was, and still is 'baby doll'. we call my son Rix as his name is Ricky and my daughter was called gob head coz she shouted alot as a child. now we just call her 'h'. her name is hailee (pronounced hilee). all gary's are called 'garybaldi'. and i ahve noticed if you have a short name it gets lengthened and if you have a long name it gets shortened. why is this? |
