Dea. Never went to the one in Woolwich. We used to go to the hall over the CO- OP in Woolwich for labour party special doo,s In Laws were staunch labourites & used to attend annual dances there. We also used to go to the dances at the Town Hall in the 60,s Remember tho the hand stamp if you left the dance at Burton,s!! Shirley |

Have to say they've all gone now. A new open air shopping area (I refuse to call it a Mall or centre) stands where i believe the Arcade stood. (between Bull plain and the bus station) it was built in 83 and houses Boots (which moved from maidenhead st) Waitrose, New Look, WH Smiths and a host of other little shops. |

I'm afraid Gravesons went a couple of years ago. Its now a Monsoon and the tourist information office. The offices above are now luxury appartments. How long ago are we talking? I've been in Hertford since 88 and I can't remember a Burtons. What I do remember is a Fine Fayre in Maidenhead Street opp. Woolworths (Now Macdonalds) a Wimpy (now a bookies) and horror of horrors, the wet fish shop Claydens closed down a couple of weeks ago. |

Well, it was Fosters when I was a kid... then by the time I was in my teens it was a second hand furniture shop called 'Lyons Den' I think... for the last few years it was an asian greengrocers and now its a Halal Butchers I think. |

Janet I come from Hoddesdon, but the OH is from Ware Burtons was near Gravesons, not on Parliament Square. I used to work in Parliament Square, and there was a cafe called Christine's. Whenever I see the 'soup of the day' sketch with Julie Waters I think of that place Dee ;-)) |

Dee, you must have lived in Ware. The Drill Hall has just had a mini makeover and has swish new glass doors. Can I ask where the Burtons was in Hertford? Was it by the Stag on Parliament Square? If it was there is still a snooker hall there but its over a Kebab shop, record shop and 'nite club' now. |

The funny thing is, we always refer to the place in Wolverton where the shop was as 'Fosters corner'. Say what you see ! lol |

I'm really not sure, I'll have to have a look at the wedding pics. I think he said it cost £13 which no doubt was no small about in 1955 |

Hubby & me got married in 1957. we used to go dancing in Lewisham SE london before we married in a hall which was over a Burtons shop. It only allowed people in with a certain dress code & was thought of as a bit up market!!!. Shirley |

and the reason that there wasn't a snooker hall above Brtons in Wolverton is.... there wasnt a Burtons lol It was FOSTERS menswear, not burtons lol DOH ! I just rang my dad to check my facts, and realised I'd got em wrong lol He then added that he bought his wedding suit from Burtons in Northampton in 1955 (cost him a week and a halfs wages lol), but can't remember there being a snooker hall upstairs. |

Yes Yes Yes a result Burtons made every effort to ensure that as many of these potential young suit buyers chose their products above all others. Prices were always competitive and passing trade was maximised by letting off the upper storeys to male-orientated businesses (such as billiard halls) which drew a steady stream of young men past the eye-catching window displays. it was still a reasonable size then I think ? Despite becoming part of MK, Wolverton hasn't really grown that much on the last 30 years or so |
