Did all Burton Tailors shops used to have snooker halls above them in the 60's

I know there was one over the Burtons in Hertford. Boys from the local grammar school used to spend their lunch times there. Dee ;-))

I'm not old enough to remember, but I know where there Burtons was in Wolverton, and there isn't a big enough room above for there to be a snooker room.

Hey Paul, there's barely room for a snooker hall in Wolverton, let alone above Burtons!! lol In Uxbridge we not only had a snooker hall we had a dance hall as well. Vivienne

I lived in Southgate, North London as a child and I remember there was a snooker hall over the Burtons. Sue

I'm sure I read somewhere once of other snooker halls over Burtons - but can't think where Seems in the 60's it was where a lot of guys went when they should have been at school Vivienne, I can't remember a dance hall in Hertford, but we had the 'drill hall' in the town I lived in, where we used to go to 'the Hop' (sounds archaic these days doesn't it?) Dee ;-))

everyones a critic ! I'll have you know there's a snooker club on the square in Wolverton, with at least a dozen tables, plus one just outside the town...

Unknown Report 31 Jan 2006 20:43

I think the one in Woolwich did, that would have been 50s/early 60s. Jan xx

Unknown

Unknown Report 31 Jan 2006 20:49

it was still a reasonable size then I think ? Despite becoming part of MK, Wolverton hasn't really grown that much on the last 30 years or so

Unknown Report 31 Jan 2006 20:53

Yes Yes Yes a result Burtons made every effort to ensure that as many of these potential young suit buyers chose their products above all others. Prices were always competitive and passing trade was maximised by letting off the upper storeys to male-orientated businesses (such as billiard halls) which drew a steady stream of young men past the eye-catching window displays. Dee ;-))

and the reason that there wasn't a snooker hall above Brtons in Wolverton is.... there wasnt a Burtons lol It was FOSTERS menswear, not burtons lol DOH ! I just rang my dad to check my facts, and realised I'd got em wrong lol He then added that he bought his wedding suit from Burtons in Northampton in 1955 (cost him a week and a halfs wages lol), but can't remember there being a snooker hall upstairs.

Hubby & me got married in 1957. we used to go dancing in Lewisham SE london before we married in a hall which was over a Burtons shop. It only allowed people in with a certain dress code & was thought of as a bit up market!!!. Shirley

Unknown

Unknown Report 31 Jan 2006 21:23

I'm really not sure, I'll have to have a look at the wedding pics. I think he said it cost £13 which no doubt was no small about in 1955

Unknown Report 31 Jan 2006 21:23

Shirley, I think they tried to put over an upmarket image, would you agree Tony? Dee ;-))

The funny thing is, we always refer to the place in Wolverton where the shop was as 'Fosters corner'. Say what you see ! lol
