Another ex-Cathy McGowan clone here. I dressed like her as far as possible - long hair, white tights, 'granny' shoes, 'granny print' or Tattershall check dresses in the summer and paisley print wool dresses or grey flannel, black or red tartan skirts in winter, etc. Trousers had to be flared, jackets and coats tailored. Mary Quant was Queen. My mother was very strict about the clothes I wore, and she insisted she wouldn't buy me what she called 'rubbish'. We'd go out window-shopping, and I drooled over fashions in Chelsea boutiques, but hardly ever won. I had huge rows with her over skirt lengths and me wanting a reefer jacket and a black poloneck jumper. She said I was too youhg to wear black! LOL I remember lots of girls I knew having tailored mohair suits. I wasn't allowed one, but she did buy me a long, bottle green leather coat and a fur one later on. When I started work in 1967, I bought myself a beige suede trenchcoat on the last day of Harrods sale. It had been reduced to a decent price, and it looked lovely till it got dirty. What a waste of money! Eventually, I took to making my own clothes, but by then things had gone 'hippy', so that was an influence later on, as was Biba. I went dancing in London nightclubs - The Flamingo, Marquee and 100 Club were favourites, and Le Macabre coffee bar was an experience in itself. The frothiest cappucino ever, Dionne Warwick singing 'Walk On By' on the jukebox, a pair of hazel eyes across the coffin-shaped table - and I was a gonner! LMHO Those were the days! CB >|<
