Taking the analytical approach (Ahem!), I've just looked up 'stockfish' in me Funk & Wagnall. It says it's a 'cod, haddock, or the like, cured by splitting and drying in the air, without salt'. Doesn't sound very lecherous to me. CB >|< |

For our Doctor Faustus work, my group has to create the sin Lechery and say how we would personify her on stage. Part of the few lines she has are as follows: 'I am one who loves an inch of raw mutton better than an ell of fired stockfish' We have to bring those words up to date and make it contemporary. The translation in the book is quite dodgy. I'll just say that 'ell' means forty-five inches and leave the rest up to your imagination. |
