Maz (the Royal One) in the East End 9256 Report 9 Feb 2006 16:28

Hi Shelli, sorry got frozen out! Yep, mail me the details and I will go sometime after half term. Might even drag Karen along lol. (she will be 'washing her hair' that day I expect) Zoe ... The only cems I can find open in 1837 are Bunhill Fields (City Road) Kensal Green St Thomas Square (Hackney) West Norwood unless they happen to be Jewish????! I would imagine a churchyard is more likely. Lots of the churches where burials were dug up, have been re-interred at City of London funnily enough. I think you need the LMA hun - why not ask phone them to look into what records are available as a starting point? I don't think there were very many different churches in the East End in those days, so it may not be too difficult to find. Maz. XX

Karen I have grave number, but then i suppose there is a good chance it may now be under the new development??? mmmm will have to think as I was curious as to whether anyone was buried with her? not that fussed LOL won't break down any brick walls, just tidy things up abit, no loose ends.

Shelli4 Report 9 Feb 2006 16:14

Karen so not worth a letter then you reckon??? Zoe check out the website Karen left earlier. very few cemeteries were open that early In London. Think parish records your best bet...

Shelli4

Shelli4 Report 9 Feb 2006 16:12

Zoe Scarey LOL Yep you're right neither was open at that time just checked ity of London as well. Even tower hamlets didn't open until 1841. I thought ( wrongly prob) that most peeps was buried in churchyards, until they was full. then cemeteries were opened as the churchyards couldn't cope????? This is why so many cemeteries were opened at appox same time. Might be worth working out local church to Mile End rd???

Zoe

Zoe Report 9 Feb 2006 16:09

Shelli4 Report 9 Feb 2006 16:08

Zoe

Zoe Report 9 Feb 2006 16:08

Shelli I seem to remember being told that Manor Park and City of LOndon weren't open that early - but I could be imagining it.
