My dad's got one and I use it occasionally. Nice in the afternoons where I can go and sit in the sunny front room, but for long term use I find the PC is better for me.

Oddly enough, i fancied trying a Dell. Think i might have a peep on their sight, just see how much one will cost. I dont want anything too fancy ... the printer / scanner etc and this computer does everything i need. I just want to play on here without being made to feel too guilty... lol. Sue xxx

Mine's 3 yrs old now and quite heavy and big. I would shop arround, try places like PC world where you can see the size and if your lucky pick them up to see the weight. What to look for depwnds what you want it to do bur a big memory and ram will always be handy. Processing speed is also important as if you have lots of windows open at the same time the laptop needs to cope. Battries - how long do they last? mine is 2 hours fully charged which is nothing if your doing familiy trees. Moniter screen - the bigger the better (for reducing eye strain) Don't be afraid to shop around. DELL can often under cut the high street as they sell direct to you with no middle man.

Dell have the best press for reliability, quality of build and back-up. I would never shop at PC World (for hardware) or Dixons. len

Hi Sue Hubby and I both have laptops - Apple mac ibooks - don't know what we did without them before! Both bought on ebay. Our son (a computer scientist) wouldn't use anything but a MAC as he says they are the best! They're great for sitting in front of the tv when there is a prog. on which you are not particularly interested in - a good excuse to get onto the message boards :-) Allie

They had forgotten to take the special offer down ! We went to Argos.... and got it at the special price. Sue x

I got an Advent lap top from PC world in 2001 it was £1600, but had the highest spec for the money, Sony with the same spec at the time was £5000, and the nearest speck to it was £2400, i have had it on none stop for a minimum 6 hours a day, some days 12 or more every day and i have not had one bit of trouble with it never broke down, so last week i decide to buy a new one and had another Advent, 2.8 gig processser, 15 inch screen, 512 ram, 60 gig hard drive, dvd writer, the cost £500, thought it was briiliant value for the money and it is so light next to the old one

Over the years I've used IBM, DELL, TOSHIBA and FUJITSHU/SIEMENS. Of all of them the Dell has been the most reliable. My current work laptop (that I'm using at this very moment) is a Dell D600. They don't sell them in the shops you know.

I dont personaly have one, however am currently lying on sofa with hubbys laptop. Brought from pc world not sure of price tho, but it is an Advent like Gary's not had any problems. Daughter has inherited one. It is a Sony, much bigger and heavier than Hubby's however it must be about 4-5yrs old now. But the previous owner had no probs and neither has she.

Paul.... lol.... i watch the adverts too !!! I still cannot believe how cheap computers are now ! Our first one [ about 7 years ago ] cost over £1000 ... would only be any good to use for a paper weight now. Nice when some things get better and cheaper, lol. OOhhhh am spoilt for choice, think i might do a bit of shopping round first.... have got 6 weeks for you all to go out and buy my birthday card..... and watch out for any good offers anywhere.
