my nearest one has a couple of lovely volunteers. They dont know much about computers but they will do anything to help. They can be a bit overpowering sometimes. They charge £2.50 per film and I have just ordered 3 films!!

I went to the local LDS and they were very helpful.... I did try discussing Mormon beliefs but was politely but firmly informed that they have a policy of not discussing religion in family research sessions..............the equipment was poor but I suppose that they are not subsidised by council tax

Keith, Where is the King's Lynn Mormon church? Is it on the Reffley?

Well I am very grateful for anything that will help me trace my family tree and I have had help and encouragement from the Hyde Park LDS centre. As for paying £4 to get the parish records, it would cost more if you bought the microfiche, more if you used the Society of Genealogists' Library and more if you had to travel to the relevant county records office. nell

I was approached by a Mormon Disciple or whatever they call themselves on the river bank in Bedford. I talked to him for an hour with me doing most of the talking. In the end he wished me luck and left me with one of their bibles. He didn't try to convert me. Went to the Cambridge centre a couple of times and they were most helpful with excellent facilities. Once again no attempt to convert me. Would use the King's Lynn centre if I could ever find it open or even find the times when it is supposed to be open. Keith

The baptism thing doesn't worry me because I don't see it as having much relevance. I just wish they'd baptise some of my Islington ancestors because no-one else seems to have done.

It is very much like a baptism. Involving total immersion and people acting as proxy for the dead. Most people who are not Mormons would agree that the actual ritual means absolutely nothing, it is the sheer bigotry which I dislike. I have my own beliefs, which are private and personal to me, which I would never seek to impose on others. If we are to respect Mormonism as a religion then that respect must be reciprocated.

Paul Report 31 Mar 2006 22:03

I don't know a lot on the subject, but I think it's not too much like a baptism. I believe, but I may be wrong, that it's more like 'honouring' the dead, and thanking them, and 'blessing them' (much how you bless a new born baby) Might I remind people that this is a religion we're talking about, and should be respected?

Yes Joan, as far as you know, but thats what Mormons believe in, and the reason why they research family tree's. I've never been to a Mormon church, but i'm really looking forward to going, as I've only heard good things about them.

Guinevere

Guinevere Report 31 Mar 2006 21:54

The volunteers in the centres are not supposed to talk about their religion at all, unless someone asks a question. It's a very important rule and firmly kept to at the one I go to. They do baptise the dead but, according to their beliefs, those who have been baptised after death can either accept or reject the baptism. I'm sure I will be baptised when I'm dead as I have a lot of LDS 'cousins' in Utah with whom I've exchanged information. It doesn't really bother me. Gwynne

I shouldn't worry about the re-baptism thing. As far as I know you can't be re-baptised once you've gone !!! lol :0) Joan

We went to the local LDS with our Family History Society about 18 months ago. we were promised no lectures but were, unfortunately, treated to a 20 minute 'talk' about why Family history is important to Mormons. However they failed to point out that the main reason for their interest is to posthumously baptise everyone into the Mormon church. I only recently found out that everyone on the IGI has been baptised after death. I will not be returning.
