Lin Remember the coalman delivering, when Mam was at work we were given 'the job' of counting sacks to make sure he wasn't selling us short. Don't think he ever did ,wouldn't have said much if he had (shy in those days lol) M x

Daniel, The electric or gas always ran out at a critical time - half way through cooking the dinner as an example. You only ever used the phone (obviously the public ones) in an emergency, so you weren,t prepared - you had to show people how to hold the phone. No quartz clocks in those days. they were always stopping. those that worked were always 20 minutes fast or slow - until granny put it right and didn,t tell anybody. Was a different world, not better, but different. Happy days. thanks for your replies

Crikey, I must still be living in the past... have taken milk to my daughters cos she ran out, given the time to many passing the house, lent candles to next door when their electric decided to cut out, tea-bags to her at the back cos she forgot em at the shop!! Blimey... thought that was the norm still!! Anne:)))

Thought a bit of trivia was called for this morning. I write as an ex policeman - people used to come out of their houses as you walked by. 'have you got a shilling for the meter' 'Penny for the gas' 'Twopence for the telephone' 'Have you got the right time?'. All good policemen were prepared for the questions well in advance. Progress? Happy days
