I don't think there is anything wrong with SPINSTER. It isn't an insult, and never was. It apparantly comes from the days when women spun their own cloth, and the unmarried women would go out and collect the wool from the bushes where the sheep had brushed against them and left bits of their wool. I think we are messing about so much wioth the language, and why would any woman object to being called MRS? Don't all attack me at once..... I'm a bit fragile today. LOL Deanna X

Jim, you'd better stay behind that sofa for a month at least. It will not be safe for you to come out before then. I promise.

How about 'Woman who has not yet found her Master?' (Ducking behind the Sofa and NOT coming out.)

Mags

Mags Report 21 Apr 2006 14:44

Lindy - I expect that's where the 'nubile' bit comes in. The donna's just 'woman' in Italian. I think LOL Trish! - that word has got MEN in it LOL

Trish

Trish Report 21 Apr 2006 14:40

Jim, old bucket would sound better than spinster!!! How would you like to be called spinster? LOL

Trish

Trish Report 21 Apr 2006 14:37

Oh, I quite like Menina

Bachelorette? It sound like something they sell for half price at DFS.

Lindy

Lindy Report 21 Apr 2006 14:34

Mags, In Portuguese Donna is used for married woman, so I am know as 'Donna Linda' as they seem to have a problem with pronouncing Lindy. Single woman are addressed as 'Menina'. Lindy ;-)))

Trish Report 21 Apr 2006 14:34

Mags, giving you a slap on the back of your hand for using the 's' word. :-))

Mags

Mags Report 21 Apr 2006 14:28

Oooh - imagine that with an Italian accent. dorna newbeelee. I might have to pretend I'm not married LOL Even 'zitella' for old maid sounds better than that 's' word - although it does sound as if you've got a spot.

Mags

Mags Report 21 Apr 2006 14:26

LOL - noooo. It's just Italian for spinster. Oooops sorry - used THAT word!

Trish

Trish Report 21 Apr 2006 14:24

Hi Mags, that's not rude is it? ;-)))

Mags

Mags Report 21 Apr 2006 14:23

Why not go for the Italian (well it's Roman so NEARLY Latin LOL) - donna nubile sounds good to me!

Trish

Trish Report 21 Apr 2006 14:18

Thanks Lindy - I think LOL Gwynne, yes, single sounds good to me too. Let's see what others think. Whatever happens nobody must use the word spinster ever again LOL

Lindy

Lindy Report 21 Apr 2006 14:13

I don't care much for the word spinster either.! Bachelorette is a bit of a mouthful and maiden reminds me of an 'old maid ' I am not much help am I ? Lindy ;-))))))

I hate 'bachelorette' far too American. Single woman or just single sounds OK to me. Gwynne
