Polly i left the NHS in nov but up until the day i left i could tell you the nams/age/diagnosis and plan for ALL the patients on my ward when i had a meeting with the matron (younger than me) she could not believe that i could give her the info she needed about MY patients without referring to the care plans!!! i told her 'that is part of basic nursing care' and she agreed but told me i was in the minority bev |

Thank you Bev, that is exactly what I am saying.....My own daughter has a nursing degree but has left because she didn't like the way the patients were ignored by the minority who would not do basic nursing care.....We Knew the name , age and diagnosis of every patient in the ward and the treatment and Matron would interrogate us out of the blue and whoa betide if we didn't know............ |

Porkie i certainly did put that staff nurse in her place, and i made it perfectly clear to her where her priorities lay. my point was that i HAD to tell her, she didn't see hands on care as a priority Bev |

Porkie i dont think we are talking emergancy situations here of course all nurses are qualified to deal with cardiac arrests and the adreniline helps them along it the day to day routine of basic nursing care and cleanliness that has been lost you do not need a degree to wash a patient and sit and hold their hand when they are dying but BECAUSE they have degrees, some nurses think this is beneath them# please note i said some and it is not the 'old school' nurses , who by the way could also resusitate patients bev |

Bev, as a ward sister that makes you part of the managment, it would there for be a part of your job to have put that staff nurse in her place, if you accept the job as any type of manager then it is up to you to sort these problems out and not blame someone else Roy |

i have to agree with polly on this one as i ward sister i was still very 'hands on' patient care was my main priority but my staff nurses (who were newly qualified) thought all they ahd to do was sit at the nurses station and write about what they hadn't done!!! i once had a nurse say to me 'i didn't study for 4 years to wipe bums' any wonder i left the NHS? I Don't want an arguement either, but I am just stating the facts as i see them. I had a heart attack 2 years ago if it was left to my doctor i would be dead, it was only because the nurses new their stuff that i am here today. Roy |

Don't want an arguement Porkie, they may be more academically qualified now but no idea how to treat a patient with properhands on nursing care. it is beneath them now ! |

The problem with bringing back the old style MATRON is as most modern nurses will tell you, in the days when matron was about nurses where little more than glorified cleaners, were as today's nurses are very well qualified and take a much more hands on approach to the care and treatment of their Patients and have lots more responsibility than ever before, the old nurses never had all this extra work and responcibility that the modern nurse has to do these days. I have to agree and i didnt start my training until 1983 it was so much better having a matron, you knew who was who and what was expected of you and the hospitals were much cleaner as student and qualified nurses you contributed to the cleaning. Star |

Paul O'Grady just mentioned it...............In the 1960 ,when I was training, the hospitals were spotless...A bug wouldn't not think of showing itself,Matron ruled the roost....Bring her back ! As a student nurse We were all petrified of her......Bed sheets were exactly 18' folded over, and yes, she had a ruler, All bed wheels had to point the same way.....Any more ,girls, and boys,... |
