mum is doing fine.on wedsnesday we had a meeting with the stroke specialist and the ocupational therapist.they have agreed that mum can come home!! but before she does we have to get a hoist,a hospital bed and a wheelchair. she had her wheelchair fitting today,so that is on the move lol. on tuesday next week the ocupational therapist is visiting dads house to see what we have to do to make life easier for mum. we will have to get a downstairs toilet built as they dont have one at the moment, but that is a minor thing lol. she is so happy that she will be home soon. love you all susiexx

I don't look at the Message Boards often but my mum had a stroke when she was 55. We were all devastated, it was a total shock. She lost the use of her right side and speech initially. She did not know who any of us were for a couple of days but gradually it all came back. When the Occupational Therapists visited her home they told my dad she could only come home with a bed downstairs and all kinds of aids and adaptations. I don't know how bad your mum has been or how old she is but the day my mum came home she said she only agreed to everything so she could come home - then dragged herself off upstairs to bed!!! She has never slept downstairs, can walk short distances unaccompanied and takes herself off to the local shop every Friday(very short distance from home). She is now 73 and she and my dad go on holiday, in England, three times a year!! I hope this helps you as a stroke affects the whole family.

it will be hard work but we will manage. as you may know already,i am an nvq trained carer so i am used to hoists etc lol. sadly i wont be allowed to go into mum through work because she is my mum lol.but i will make sure that i choose my fave work colleagues to wash, dress and move my mum lol. the care package will be a big one,4 times a day.but i can always help dad during visits if he needs me. im sure that when mum is home she will improve more.she will gradually get the use of her arm and leg back. susie xxx

Thinking of you and your Mum. My Dad had a stroked age 57, now 65. He couldn't walk, talk and didn't know us at first. The occupational therapist was brill - came to see him at home ( bed downstairs and he coudln't walk ) within 3 months of been home they had him up, walking and talking. he is a lot better now but struggles to communicate at times and gets confused, but he goes out to the pub and even fishing without the use of his right side - What a guy - I recently got him some more Physio and thanks to them they had him writing his name with his right hand for the first time in 7 years - they are fantastic people who never give up I hope that you Mum gets well soon take care Jo

Susie, that is real good news, I'm so pleased for you, having been in your situation early last year, it is great to see how they progress, with Mum it was steady but slow, she has now gained the use of her left side, but cannot see properly out of her left eye. Sending best wishes to your Mum, thinking of you all, Chris :)
