Mags from Bristol, didnt anybody warn you to keep off the Hokonui moonshine? We no longer have eagles in NZ, havent for many a long year. What you saw were probably (almost certainly) the Australian Harrier. Plenty of those that eat road kill. The NZ eagle was a HHHUUUGGGEEE bird going by the fossil bones that have been found.

Not of badger cubs Christine LOL If they eat slugs, I might leave the gate to the garden open for them; they could feast every night. The sett must be on the embankment somewhere, although I've no idea how far they travel looking for food. I think I'll have to do some reading. We have seen an adult badger around before but seeing the cubs was a bit special. We'll be keeping an eye open for them now. Gwynneth - That's such a shame. As you say, killing for the sake of it seems particularly cruel. Even though I was brought up in a small village (as it was then) and our house was surrounded by fields, I had to wait until I moved to Bristol to hear a fox barking. The first night in this house, I was woken by something that sounded like a goose honking and wondered what the heck it was: an eeerie sound They used to use the tiny front lawn we had then to 'hang out' and chat their 'women' up. Luckily they moved on the next season. Perhaps I should have provided kebabs and beer. LOL Mags xx

Don't get me started on foxes! I have had 2 wild ducks nesting recently in our garden and both times the nests have been raided and all eggs taken.Crafty fox waits for a full nest of eggs, 13+ Unfortunately the last raid cost mother duck her life, earlier this week.Waiting to see whether the 1st duck escaped (distinctive colouring, so we'd know her) I know it's all part of nature but why just kill her and leave her in our garden. I could accept it better if the fox had taken her for food.

Oh wow! Never seen an eagle - well only the ones in NZ - and they're stupid. You don't see many live ones because they think they can stare down a truck while they're feasting on road kill.! We get foxes going up and down the driveway too. My husband had just put the car away and met a dog fox as they both turned the corner of the drive at the same time - don't know who jumped furthest LOL. Mags x

lol, But I'm sure it would have been really impressive to see the badgers as it's very rare to see them so close to civilisation. My wee fella was mesmerised the other day by two eagles when we were out for a walk. We have a fishing harbour in front of our house and we have a very tame seal in the bay known locally as sammy but it's quite common for us to see porpoises, dolphins, minke whales etc we are quite the paradise!!

Jan - You're never more than 10 feet from a rat. Isn't that what they say? LOL Best take a baseball bat to bed with you.

Mags Report 3 May 2006 22:23

And there was me changed the word 'get' to 'be' LOL Mind you when Phil called from the bedroom saying 'come and have a look at this' I did wonder for a second or two! They came through the gate that leads onto the driveway from the old railway embankment. The security light went on on the garage and as if they were in a spotlight, they played to the audience. There was something else the other side of the gate but we couldn't see that clearly but I'd presume it was 'Mum'. I thought it was early for cubs - obviously wrong! LOL Mags xx
