My surname gets all sorts of different ways: Connelly Connolly Conneley Conneely Conely Conley the list goes on... My g grandmother used to say she was a nelly not a nolly! Update - forgot this one - in 1871 it is transcribed as Comcely |

Hi Ann (with no E) Thank you for your E. It is not nice for people to mistake you for AnnE. I too get called Annie and I hate it . Anne |

There are lots of things I find annoying in life but whether people call me Dave or David and that sort of thing doesn't worry me. I think it's the intention behind what people do that matters more. |

oh yes frequently lol but I get used to it. People pronounce my name, Lucy-A, Loo-see-a, or Loo-sha when it should be Loo-chee-uh. |

Gwyn in Kent | Report | 7 May 2006 21:54 |

I've had problems with my name for as long as I can remember, but it doesn't annoy me. It's just part of the problem of growing up in Hampshire with a Welsh name, I guess. Until I was married I went by my full name. Hubby called me Gwyn so that's what I became to our friends too. Now I get Gwen from people who think that's what it should be. On these boards, I get Gwynne, sometimes but that is the signature of Guinevere, not me, Gwyn. |

I've had this problem all my life, frequently get called caroline. I've only worked for two bosses and both of them have insisted on calling me Caroline although I've pointed out regularly that I'm a 'lyn' not a 'line' but I give up in the end and just answer to anything vaguely right. My son JONATHAN often gets Jonathen, Jonathon or Johnathon MATTHEW regularly gets Mathew and you'd think LAURA was quite straightforward but she sometimes gets Lora! Only Richard seems to get his spelt right. I suppose it's better people spell names wrong than not bother atall but I do always try and get other peoples right. CAROLYN |

My Nan used to say 'You can call me whatever you like as long as it's not late for my tea'! People occasionally assume that I'm Amanda but I'm not, I'm definitely Mandy, but the worst thing is when some people actually shorten it to 'Mand' aaaargh, hate it!! My son Jordan has, on occasions, been called Gordon. Oops! Mandy |

My Aunt always speels my name Rachell - I only have 1 L in my name! And I hate being called Rach and Raquell, but I don't mind the welsh pronuceation of rachel (Ratchel - roughly) Everyone (inc 1 grandfather) says my brothers name wrong, he's Owain (said O-Wine) but get's called O-wayne by most people and he hates it, although one class mate in infants sent him a xmas card and spelt his name Owine - well at least it was a good attempt (the mum had no idea how it was spelt so wrote it as it sounded) My mum is Lynne and gets mail with every other spellling too including from family! While my nan gains letters Kathleen become KathAleen. Strangely enough we are now so use to it that we now say oh well, they still haven't learnt! |

One of my daughters is Katie, but her Irish grandmother-in-law calls her Kitty. When my son-in-law introduced them, his Irish accent made Katie sound like Kitty! Sue xx |

I used to get this at school in the 50's and 60's and later when I started work but surprisingly now most people both spell and pronounce my name correclty. What is most annoying is when someone persists in using their own interpretation, even after they have been politely corrected. That is errr... doh....! |
