Trish Report 6 Jun 2006 16:04

Just heard from hubby, he's not been right health wise since Christmas. Been back and forth to the docs for ages - he got sent to the hospital today and it turns out he has a blood clot in his leg. What I think of doctors is not printable here :-(((

Hi Ros, he has been given tablets now from the hospital - we're supposed to be going on holiday this weekend so hope he's up to it. To cap it all the car has broken down (he told me in the same phone call).

Sunny, to say I am livid is putting it mildly

Thats a shock Trish - thank goodness he persisted and got it diagnosed......they can do a lot......

Trish Report 6 Jun 2006 16:15

Sally, yes, he should be OK now they've found the problem but to think he's been walking around like that since the end of last year ... well ! My mother died from a blood clot so you can imagine what I'm thinking here.

Hi Trish Your poor OH......... hope he'll be on the mend soon. Just curious was he seeing the doctor because he had pain, swelling, leg warm to the touch & leg cramps? If so the quack should have picked up on a blood clot and you'd both have cause to complain and find out why they didn't question this.....however if this was masked with other symptoms you may find it harder to complain. My bros in law had a clot that went undiagnosed till it reached his lung..........he passed out twice........... he just thought he had bashed his leg or bruised a muscle at the time and didn't think too much of it all.... Very similiar story in the Mail today. A man has to have a brain scan but has to wait two month for an NHS appointment. All his mates club together and raised £700 so that he could have his scan private. After the scan the doctor told him that he was booking him into the hospital or an emergency operation for the following day as going by the scan he has only two weeks maximum to live. Hows that for mates coming to the rescue. Lin

Trish, I hope he now starts to soon feel better. On a practical note. please don't forget to inform your holiday insurers, if you don't and you need medical assisatance abroad they may refuse to pay. They will need to know the medicine he is taking. Ann Glos

Trish Report 6 Jun 2006 16:28

Thanks Ann, will get that sorted out later today. Deb, his leg has been sore and very swollen, he was also complaining of breathlessness (first doc said he was old, fat and a smoker and to go away). Second doc was a bit more thorough but said he'd probably got a virus.

Trish thats simply awful..........I do hope you complain bitterly!! This could have led to pulmonary embolism - what idiots.

I think its a bit harsh to call a qualified doctor an idiot without knowing the facts. Many medical conditions can be hard to diagnose and the symptoms aren't always clear cut. Many of our ancestors died of easily treatable conditions nowadays and I am very grateful that access to the health service is relatively simple for most people in this country. Best wishes to your husband for a speedy recovery. nell

Nell to a point I'd agree..........but he had a swollen leg & pain to quote Trish 'first doc said he was old, fat and a smoker and to go away' To me that's an idiot!!

Trish

Trish Report 6 Jun 2006 16:58

Deb, I agree with you. They shouldn't have dismissed him just because he's over 50, a bit overweight and smokes a pipe a couple of times a day. This certain doctor hasn't heard the last of this.

Trish, Sorry to hear about Alan, it really is frightening. Thank goodness he has someone watching over him. Now he has been diagnosed he should be ok. Are you going to your usual lonely little spot? Best Wishes (and health) to you both. June xx

Trish Report 6 Jun 2006 19:43

Hi June, no, we are due to go on a cruise on Sunday for a week to Norway (been planning this for 18 months). Doctors say they want to do a blood test every day for 7 days !!! We only have 5 days! One way around it I have just learnt is to maybe do an injection into the stomach each day until we get back - will see if the doctors agree to this at the hospital tomorrow, if they do then it's contact the cruise line and insurance people to see if that would be OK. Fingers crossed everyone.

Trish, I hope you can sort out about the blood tests, The cruise sounds lovely, I hope you take plenty of photos. June xx

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 7 Jun 2006 03:20

Do hope all works out so you can enjoy your cruise. I have had little faith in doctors since I lost my daughter, if the doctor had told me to come in and see him, instead of saying take a couple of days off and rest, I might have a daughter and grandchildren to visit instead of a grave. My dad was told by the same doctor for 18 months that he had a chest infection, when he finally had an xray it turned out to be lung cancer, too far gone to treat. We need to make sure doctors are kept on their toes, they can't afford to make mistakes and we certainly can't make allowances for their laxity? in diagnosing correctly.
