Gwynne, I'm very disappointed with you. Always thought you were very reasonable. LOL Not everyone can afford digital or satellite. When I last looked there were 5 terrestial channels... for the next 4 weeks 2 of them will be taken over by the beautiful game. That leaves 3 channels that can show all the drivel shown the rest of the 48 weeks by all 5. Please, please, please let me watch all these gorgeous young men displaying their fine skills without feeling guilty. Jean (who wishes she could afford to go to the world cup but has to rely on the telly)

You're right Barbara - it doesn't do for us all to like everything, I'm not keen on tennis, or golf........and don't get me started on Snooker, or wrestling which my OH loves.....

Barbara Report 11 Jun 2006 11:41

We all like different things, I like cookery programmes, find soaps boring and if I want depressing I can always read my bank statement, football is usually boring though some of the south American teams are entertaining, now snooker..............paint drying............I can cope for a few weeks, now come Wimbledon...................... Barbara..xx

The people driving about in cars with flags whilst the matches are on are the wives/partners of those at home watching! They are just tryting to escape for a while! Merry

The last line of your main paragraph above Gwynne, is spot on. I only switch on at kick-off time and off at the final whistle. Keep telling myself it,s a football competition not something really important, but I still watch. Good girl, Christine. Happy days

Harry, You're preaching to the converted about cookery programmes. But you don't usually get the normal schedule swept aside so that the two main channels can broadcast them for hours for weeks on end. Or have a load of incoherent oiks discussing the finer points ad nauseum later on. It's all wall to wall sport I object to, even the few I can tolerate. Gwynne

If the complaint had been about cooking programmes, I would agree. The football is a bit wall to wall, but there are plenty of alternative programmes and MOST people have at least two sets In fairness to Gwynne, I feel a bit similar when Wimbledon comes around and I know my good lady things as per this complaint.. Wonder what our ancestors, possibly huddled round a crackly radio ( or with a third hand view of a newspaper,) would have thought. Let,s count our blessing. Any replies before the first match starts please. Happy days

**pulls goat away from Gwynne before it's injured** Gwynne, another good point about the match commentary. Was annoyed a few weeks back when missed the start of LOST as forced to watch repeats of goals in the match.

Hi Nell, I am a fortunate woman in that neither husband nor son has any interest in anything other than games involving England. And son isn't much fussed about them. Mostly OH doesn't bother with football at all but makes an exception for internationals, for some reason. Gwynne

Oh, and I expect you know these lines from the Wendy Cope poem 'My Lover' (substitute nations instead of club names) 'For I will consider my lover, who shall remain nameless... For he supports Tottenham Hotspur with joyfula nd unswerving devotion. For he abhors Arsenal, whose supporters are uncivilised and rough, For he explains that Spurs are magic, whereas Arsenal are boring and defensive, For I knew nothing of this six months ago, nor did I want to. For now it all enchants me.' nell

Gwynne I could't care less about footie but while its on it has these benefits: my husband and two sons now have something to unite them, instead of arguing. I can be on the computer a lot more! I can go and shop whilst the streets are empty! nell

............ and while I'm here. It wouldn't be so bad if they just showed the various sporting events but they also have hours and hours of people droning on about what might happen, what did happen in 1972, and how many times and by whom. Is all the blethering necessary? *sacrifices goat* Gwynne
