Seems I am not the only one who dislikes complete strangers calling me by my first name, I wondered if I was being rather old fashioned, but am reassured by the fact that others feel the same ;-))

I am married and prefer Mrs but don't mind Ms if it's coming from someone who doesn't know me. I don't mind letters addressed to Mr and Mrs, but don't like Mrs John Parkins, makes it sound as if I belong to him, seems to be only elderly relatives that use that. I work at a school and although introduce myself as Mrs, am always referred to as Miss, along with all other female teachers and LSAs. So, in the course of a day I often get addressed as all three! Hi Claire I had a problem with politicians in the last election, they woudl write to me using my christian name, and I objected. I didn't know them, and some of them I didn't really want to know at all. I feel they are being over familiar :-))

I am quite happy to be Mrs but I hate being called Madam in a shop or on the telephone.

I hate Ms - if you are married, why try and hide the fact? Stella

Claire Report 24 Jul 2006 16:16

I am a Mrs. I don't belong TO my hubby, but proud to belong WITH him. I was happy to change my name (he would have changed his to mine if I wished, or hyphenated). I hate being addressed on paper as Ms. I work in a small friendly chemist and I try to make a point of addressing our customers properly. I find it very hard to address anyone I have not been personally introduced to by their first name. It feels very disrespectful to me. I usually ask any new customers what their title is so that we can put it on our records and then I also know how to address them. I take pains to find out. I think it is good manners. I hate people who I don't know (eg sales people, or Reps) calling me by my first name. I haven't been introduced and it is too familiar! God I sound sooooo old fashioned don't I?! LOL Claire xx

It’s been interesting reading all your comments, and it’s a good point that Gwynne and Joy make about men being Mr whatever their marital status Personally I prefer Mrs, and hate it when people call me by my first name when they are trying to ‘cold sell’ on the phone. I would far rather they called me Mrs H…… Mention on the use of madam makes me smile. I often call gentleman Sir when I am working, but took someone to task the other day for calling me madam. After all I don’t run a brothel !!!!! ;-)))

Jack (Sahara) Report 24 Jul 2006 15:58

I'm divorced and so get all 3. I don't really mind what others call me (just about everyone I know calls me Jack or Jackie). But I do hate it when someone asks me if it's Mrs, Miss or Ms because I never know what to say! I tend to say 'Take your pick' lol. Hope I get married again one day then at least I will know i'm a Mrs. Jack x

Dizzy Lizzy 205090 Report 24 Jul 2006 10:56

I am quite happy to be Mrs, having been married for 17 years. If however, I ever become single again I do not know how I would feel. I would probably revert to Miss because I find Ms clumsy and unnatural. Liz

Huia

Huia Report 24 Jul 2006 10:51

I feel that Ms sounds like an angry wasp. But when I have had to address an envelope to a woman and dont know what she is I reluctantly use it. But dont anybody DARE to call me that. I have felt for a few yrs now that I dont mind who calls me by my first name. In fact at choir I have had young things (50 yrs my junior) call me Huia. Doesnt bother me at all. Although I dont know if I would be happy if a business man meeting me for the first time called me that without my permission. (Women! Cant make up their minds!)

Morning, Dee …. :-) I remember the previous thread. I think that I probably said then something like I don't mind what I am called so long as it is not late for dinner (a saying of my father's)…. :-) I wonder why it is that ladies have the choice of designation, yet for gentlemen there is only the one: Mr. Joy
