I think you have to get a card to put in your laptop. Have you tried the website for your current service provider?

You have to configure your router to computer and laptop, it can be wirless free or pluged into back of modem and connected to router with ethernet cable, then you have to wifi on your laptop and a usb adaptor i think done mine last week nightmare had to ring Belkin hotline lol suex

If you are doing it wirelessly you will PROBABLY have to type 192.168.1.1 into your Internet Explorer address bar. From there you will be able to configure the network (you may well need a password that either you have set or is still the default one). Check your router manual for details because they all differ o9r give me a shout if you are stuck.

I have a wi fi enabled laptop. The modem is on the PC, it's a Belkin. I am on AOL What happens if my network is not secured? I know others in the vicinity can use my connection, but can they see what I am doing on my computer? Sorry if that's a stupid question but I have no idea. I am picking up a Wanadoo network as well but it is secured.

I know what you are talking about Margaret because I had the same problem. However, have just solved mine with the help of my son who was here on holiday. Now I am quite computer literate but he when he started talking about MAC filtering and did I know my MAC address, I left him to it. I now have a secure network!! Perhaps Judy in the States is the person to contact - am sure she would be able to help.

When we first had the networking installed I couldn't understand how to do it, so paid a Belkin engineer to connect up for us. PC and 2 laptops, mine and my daughters. Trouble is that me and my daughter have since had new laptops and it is these I need to secure. If people cannot see what I doing I am not so bothered about it being unsecured. Can someone answer that question for me please?

Hi hun If the network was already in place and its secure, then nothing has changed hun, it dont matter that you have new lappys all they are doing is connecting to an excisting wi fi network. Steve

But surely if others in the vicinity can use Margaret´s connection then it means her network is not secure.

Hi Steve The old laptops were networked by a PC card which was all set up by the Belkin engineer. Why do the new laptops say I am on an unsecured Belkin network? Margaret

Steve are you still there? I have just put the old laptop on and I clicked on the view network. Guess what? It's unsecured. Too late to get the Belkin bloke in again, its almost 2 years since he did the job. Right, how do I secure the network please? Margaret

Elaine i dont know how long the net work has been up and running but it was being used before the 2 new lappys arrived so its poss that it has been used by others i dont know. Open I E type in 10.1.1.1 That should open your router interface Then for 64 Bit 1) Under Wireless click WEP 2) Click Enable for WEP Function 3) Click 64 Bit for WEP Mode leave all other settings as default 4) Under Key 4 field, click the Clear button 5) Place a tick in the Passphrase field 6) In the space provided in Passphrase, create a passphrase – this can be any combination of letters and numbers 7) Click Save Settings 8) Now click WEP again 9) Write down the characters in Key 1 – this is now your ‘Network Key’ or ‘Encryption Key’ NB. There are ten (10) characters in total. This is the ‘key’ that will be required to be entered on your wireless PC. When you setup your wireless adapter, it will ask you to type in a ‘Network Key’ or ‘Encryption Key’. 10)64 Bit WEP is now enabled. Or for 128Bit 1) Under Wireless click WEP 2) Click Enable for WEP Function 3) Click 128 Bit for WEP Mode leave all other settings as default 4) Under Key 4 field, click the Clear button 5) Place a tick in the Passphrase field 6) In the space provided in Passphrase, create a password – this can be any combination of letters and numbers 7) Click Save Setting 8) Now click WEP again 9) Write down the characters in Key 1 – this is now your ‘Network Key’ or ‘Encryption Key’ NB. There are twenty six (26) characters in total. This is the ‘key’ that will be required to be entered on your wireless PC. When you setup your wireless adapter, it will ask you to type in a ‘Network Key’ or ‘Encryption Key’. 10)128 Bit WEP is now enabled Steve

I don't know how to find out if my wireless network (Belkin) is secure or unsecure!! But I do know that to get to the Belkin router set up page you need to type 192.168.2.1 into Internet Explorer. Dee x

Margaret

Margaret Report 20 Aug 2006 13:07

Dee I've tried that number too, still can't get in

Margaret

Margaret Report 20 Aug 2006 13:10

Dee I went into control panel and then network connections. right click on the connection you are using and then view available wireless networks. That's how I discovered mine was unsecured.

Strange Margaret... I just typed that no. into the address bar here on Genes and got into it OK. Only other thing I can suggest is that you call Belkin...00-800-223-55-460...the tech support is free. Dee x
