Lucia delete your last but one input on this thread as you are good enough make yourself work hard the world is out there waiting for you I just wish that the opprotunities you have were there when I was young, so reach for the sky and remember education is only a short part of your learning and in future years you will be able to look back with pride good luck girl xxxxxHowie

Dinnae put yersel' doon Lassie. If you aim for the moon you may hit the top of the lamp-post. Aim at the top of the lamp-post and you might hit yourself in the foot. You don't know what you are capable of unless you try, and it is better to attempt and fail than not to attempt which is a worse way of failing. You go for it, and when you feel that it is getting too hard just remember 'Grampa believes I can do it!'

Hi Lucia I don't think we've ever spoken, but your post reminded me of when my friends and I were appling to uni. I went to an ordinary comp, and a good friend of mine at school was in the same position as you, as far as Oxbridge is concerned. He felt that he wouldn't fit in either. Despite that, he did apply, got in easily, and had the time of his life - he's never regretted it, and it still carries a lot of cred. Good luck with your choice, whatever it is. Sharon xx

Ive got to agree with KayaLa - but then most of unis u have choosen have plenty of prestige. U know i stil like the idea of Edinburgh Uni - that would be my choice because the History there is soooo good

Thanks for your advice everyone :-) I was looking at Cambridge and Durham and Durham won me over. I'm applying for St Chad's college there - I won't get in though! lol There's such a high standard but it seems like a nice place and I won't have to do silly tests to get in lol Although I have read that Durham has a shameful reputation as being an 'Oxbridge rejects' place so chances of getting in are low! hmmm..I'm so indecisive - I still don't have a clue :-s lol

I knew some very interesting Chadsmen when I was at Durham University 1974-77. The bells, the bells, it's right next to the Norman Cathedral. They used to have a really nice Candlemas Ball in February, which had outdoor tents with heaters. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a student in Durham, and I married a Castleman to boot!!! Ultimately, you have to choose the place that feels a good fit for you - you can get a good education anywhere if you put your mind to it.

If it's York, I'll see you get a good feed from time to time! Did my first course at Sunderland and then a one year degree course at Scarborough - (that came under Leeds Uni) 'Oh I do like to be beside the seaside!' jay

Have you visited any uni's yet? I think you'll get a feel for a place once you do

Phoenix Report 13 Sep 2006 23:46

If you can go with the Uni with the most prestige - your degree will have a lot more clout that way. I started a degree as a Mature Student - bit of a long story, but basically I could have got into the Uni of my choice to do Archaeology and History but hooked with the Man I am now married to and ended up going through clearing for something different. I ended up doing Combined Arts (History Major) and the first year was at the local college - I hated it and realised that it just wasn't the course for me - we had to learn about German History and there's only so much you can take in about the likes of Bismark. lol I didn't even complete my first year, I hated it that much - actually only a few people did stick at it. The ones who went to an acutally Uni did much better and all said how much they loved it! You will have such a great time at Uni - you're bound to be nervous and unsure about it now, but once you get there and settle in you'll love it. Kaye x
