Morning, I mentioned this on Jacky Jingle's thread where the comparison has been made that 400 hard core addicts are currently being given courses of heroin on the NHS at a cost of £40 per day, while sufferers of Alzheimer's are denied the £2.50 per day it would cost to ease their suffering. In some instances medical staff are injecting the drug into the arms of the addicts, many of whom are serial criminals. A police chief now wants all 200,000 (known) addicts to receive this treatment. The £6 million spent on this group alone would pay for treatment for 6,600 Alzheimer sufferers per year. Addicts steal £2.5bn goods pa to feed their habit. 50% of recorded crime is drug related. Each addict prescribed heroin on the NHS costs us £15,000 per year. What kind of society are we living in? Aileen xxxx |

I'm disgusted!! Why the heck should we pay for their Heroin, in anyway shape or form!! Makes me so mad! There's women fighting to get Breast Cancer drugs that the NHS wont pay for! Seriously ill people that cant get the drugs they need! How could they justify giving Heroin out on prescription to Drug Addicts? Amanda xx |

The thing is though most drug users never stop, the £15,000 worth of drugs wouldn't be enough, they would still find a means to get more. |

I think there are pros and cons to this:- 1. How much does it cost to employ a policeman per annum? Perhaps the money could be better spent employing more boys in blue, which might reduce the crime rate somewhat? 2. If heroin addicts were given heroin free, perhaps with enough of it they will see themselves off and save us all a lot of bother. I understand they get given pethadine (spelling) free on prescription already, so cant image that heroin will be much dearer. The world has gone mad! Jac |

I think he must be talking about the ones that cant be weaned of it. Like the ones that have had rehab but go straight back on it. |

No, I think it would be better to ween them off it under supervision. |

a police chief said yesterday that it would cost about £15,000 per drug addict per annum but they steal £45,000 worth of goods to pay for their habit (not sure of exact figure) What do you think? |
