An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 1 Dec 2006 12:20

Tania I watched a very moving programme in the eighties, about a huge mental hospital in Lancashire. It focused on four elderly women, who were being prepared for life in the outside world after spending 60 years in the hospital. They had been admitted as young girls, under the weighty medical diagnosis of 'Moral imbecile' 'Moral insanity' etc. and just left to rot. One of the women had been admitted as a pregnant 15 year old, because, when asked who the father of her child was, she would keep on saying that it was her own father. She was warned that if she kept on saying such wicked things, she would be sent to the Asylum, but she wouldn't change her story. As her father was an upstanding pillar of the community, she got locked up. Only he could have got her out and he didn't. I hope he rotted in Hell. She never got to see her baby because they put a pillow over her head while she was giving birth. She doesn't know what happened to it, or even if it was a girl or a boy. I wept when she looked at the camera and said 'I should have liked to have married and had children'. OC

The sisters were shocking but the thing that horrified me most when I lived in the UK in the late 80s was the discovery that there were elderley women in pschiatric facilities such as Broadmoor who had been placed there by there families who decided that because they had teen pregnancies they were mentally ill. It was impossible at that late stage of there lives to put them any where else in the community so I assume they died there. Regards Tania

Oh something like that would give me nightmares. Just stick to my crime thriller tonight thank you. Or should I say this morning. Saw a 'Chucky' doll today in a window as a Xmas present and nearly chucked up. No taste. Just trawling about to get tickets for the Dionne Warwick concert. She's over here. Still going strong. Really like her. Got a friend who has worked with REM and is back in the UK. So maybe swist anything I can to get there for free. He's got to have an inroad there. Well if you are Scottish you have to live up to the rep. Aileen xx

Oh it was very good Mrs P but probably the book would have been more difficult to take in. More graphic. Being a Scot my religion is very basic. Just a simple cross. Just brought up by my parents to be a decent human being and instilled it in my children and them onwards to my grandkids. Think we are all born with morals but some chose to go down a different path. Aileen xx

Hi all, Just off to bed but will say before I go that it was absolutely disgraceful what happened to these girls. Watched a programme probably a couple of years ago. I think one of them wrote a book about their experiences. Religion is one of the greatest comforts to millions of people whoever they worship, but when it gets corrupted by individuals it turns into pure evil. Just take a look around today. Aileen xxx
