I am trying to trace Frederick von Felton born circa 1840 in either Germany, Holland or Switzerland. The only clue I have about him is that he was a Japanner by trade (one who varnishes in the manner of the Japanese, or one skilled in the art). Does anyone know whether this trade was particularly strong in either of these countries in the mid to late 19th century. If I can isolate a country it will considerably narrow my search!! Thank you. Can't help, but bear in mind this was the time of the unification of Germany - before that it was separate small states. Jay

google the words Japanner and Germany and it comes up with a few things which makes it look like it was a common occupation over there! http://www.google*co*uk/search?hl=en&q=japanner+germany&meta=

Japanning is a coating of steel with a sort of black paint. The sort of coating you see on those long hinges fitted to shed doors. Usually fixed with 1'' no 8 Black Japanned dome-headed screws.
