I have another nasty kidney infection (now on antibiotics & advised to drink plenty of clear fluids), silly me thought I had put my back out!!! Mum always boiled up pearl barley, drained off the liquid & made me drink it. A friend has just advised me to try drinking cranberry juice. At the moment I am trying to down a pint of water every hour!!! Anyone any ideas???

Cranberry Juice is great for 'waterworks' problems but be careful as it should not be taken if you are on certain medication such as warfarin

Going to disagree - cranberry juice helps prevent kidney and bladder problems, yes. But if you are in pain from the infection then lemon barley water is better - the barley water neutralises the ahem, burning wee feeling. Of course, you could have both - boil up some barley, make barley water and mix it with cranberry juice, quite nice I should think. Either way, whatever you drink should be well diluted with water. Hope you are better soon. OC

I suffer from kidney infections and my doctor said you can have either. However that means Lemon Barley Water and not the orange stuff. Another tip is never drink Orange squash. Not good at all for people with kidney trouble. Its full of gunk! Hot Lemon Barley Water is lovely. Lager is great also, it flushes the system out! I am sure he told me that too. Fi

hi carol, for the moment, you need to flush the kidneys out, so water only. once the kidneys are clear, then add cranberry classic to your daily routine, its refreshing, and very good for you. bryan.

Cranberry Juice is great for bladder infections, like cystitis...but if its a kidney infection, which needs flushing, I would suggest mainly plain water, and use Lemon Barley Water. Too much Cranberry Juice can have the opposite effect if you are not careful.

Carol, I drink barley water just the way your mum makes it, told my G.P. and he said that it's one of the best things for clearing out the system. OH makes two or three large jugfulls and I keep having a pint every so often. Jeff x

Cranberry juice is good but a lot of the cartons you buy are just Cranberry drink, which is diluted so not worth taking. You ae better taking cranberry tablets from h & b or similar, after you have cleared this bout of cystitus up, it will help you stay clear then with a bit of luck too. Hope you feel better soon, cystitus can make you feel really down.

Thankyou everyone, have managed to drink 6pints of water so far today. Have got carton of Cranberry juice will add a little to my jugs of water tommorrow. Its not cystitus, very painful around right kidney, when it is having to work. 6 pints means that I have had a rather uncomfortable day!! Hopefully the antibiotics will start to kick in soon!!!

Apologies, didn't read the thread properly, but cranberry capsules will help your kidneys too.
