Son set me up with skype, head phones & web cam. He is a bit puzzled that he cannot see me..... must remember to remove the sock I have over the web cam before he visits though.

Hi, We have a VOIP usb phone so therefore it's just like talking on a normal phone and quality is usually good. We find it really useful for calling landlines in UK, only just over 1p per min. Christine in Portugal

I've been using Skype for about a year now. I have a god daughter in Kenya. We just text each other and say and 'shall we Skype at ??. Sometimes we have a three way conversation with her Mum. O.H bought me a webcam and now I can see them esp. my god daughters little girl, which is lovely. Also use it here for long conversations with friends. It's amazing Linda

I'm interested in skype too. How does the person at the other end know when you are trying to contact them through the PC. Do you have to email them in advance and warn them to be sitting at their computer at a set time?

I have Skype and talk to a few contacts though to be honest I find it easier to use Instant Messaging because my laptop is in the living room and if I talk it would disturb anyone watching TV. But it is fun to be able to make free phone calls to the other side of the world. Just a word of warning.......if you don't want all sorts of weirdos trying to get you to add them to your contacts list I suggest you use the function that lets you stay hidden from anyone not one of your approved contacts. I didn't do this for the first few days and got repeatedly contacted by some very persistant males who became rather a nuisance! That was despite not having a Skype name that was obviously female. I have it although don't have many contacts. I listen through my PC speakers although I need my hearing aid if the person has a soft voice. I also have a web cam and think the sound is clearer through Skype. You do ned a microphone of course. Ann Glos
