Hi Sal, I spent that week in London playing with a brass band on the Embankment. I did however manage to get a glimpse of the golden coach when it was on it's way back from the Abbey. It was difficult to see anything as the streets were thronged with people but they are still fond memories. Jeff xxx |

I've still got my silver coin - I lived on a main road at the time so no street party was held, the side street did however have a party and I can remember standing and watching the other kids sat at a long table full of sandwiches - I was 9 at the time and the thought of me standing and watching and not one adult coming and asking me to join them sticks in my mind o))) |

I just wanted to thank everyone who replied to my thread, answered my questions - and gave me lots of fuel for my story! Lovely memories - I wonder if the current generation will look back on the noughties with the same nostalgia we have for the 70's and 80's! Thanks again. Sal |

Hi Carol, I vaguely remember Rock Follies. How about Saturday Night Special? Very bad dancing and naff variety acts. Also 'Oh Boy!' and Swap Shop, Crackerjack, the Goodies, the Professionals. 1977 had John Noakes and Shep, Peter Purves and Lesley Judd, presenting Blue Peter. John Craven's newsround, Morecambe and Wise, Stuart Hall on Opportunity Knocks. Sal |

What fantastic memories you all have it's a pleasure to read them. I don't remember much as I was very ill in hospital but I do remember being somewhat relieved that I had got out of all the baking that I had agreed to do for the party. My three children enjoyed the day as did my husband. Beryl x |

Thanks for that link, Ann, that was useful. I remember Famel cough medicine - very strong taste but I loved it. Mother's Pride bread, lemon curd sandwiches, wagon wheels (which were definitely bigger in those days!), jammy dodgers. If I was sick, i got mashed banana with sugar. We used to eat golden syrup sandwiches, condensed milk on toast, sugar sprinkled on stork margarine on white bread - it's amazing i still have all my own teeth! Mrs B, i can't believe they didn't let you join the party! that's the sort of thing that scars you for life! We didn't have dettol - we had ibcol pine disinfectant. Even now, the smell of pine disinfectant reminds me of being sick as a kid. we also had izal toilet paper - i thought my friends were posh cos they had soft loo roll! |

I remember that weekend well - even though I was only 6! Because it was a long weekend, my family went camping to Hastings. Unfortunately we were camped on top of a cliff and there were extremely high winds - all guy ropes snapped and the tent nearly blew away so we had to come home in the middle of the night. Drove all the way back to Essex having to stop twice for my mum to change my clothes and dad to chuck the floor mats of car away - I suffered terribly from travel sickness when I was young! And because we hadn't paid anything towards the street party because we thought we'd be away, my brothers and I had to sit in the house and watch all the neighbours having fun outside! The week before at school we were all given Silver Jubilee gifts - my brothers got a spoon each, and I got a coin (but I really wanted one of those spoons!). |

I remember a big fancy dress party on the village green. I was a Spanish lady, my sis Carmen Miranda and my brother the lad from the bread advert with the black eye - can't remember what brand, but was big advert at the time. It was red hot. We had standpipes up as there was a drought - not as hot as 1976 but people tend to remember 77 because of the jubilee. I think is was half term as I seem to remember everyone getting involved in the preparations. Happy days! |

Hi sal Im 40 my son is 22 He's into music such as The who , paul weller , and loves quadrophenia. I took him to see the Who and he was quite embarrased that i sang all the songs , and know all the words to quadrophenia. My brothers kids are always at the doctors , given medication for every sniff and cough. We used to have bronchal linctus that was mixed with hot water made your eyes water but worked. We had vick rubbed on our chest that burnt your skin and dettol in the bath if we had cuts. we must have smelt terrible! Lorraine |

Hi Lorraine, We weren't posh enough for Ideal milk - we had carnation! We used to have ice cream on sudays for a treat, and dandelion and burdock pop. Junk food didn't exist - except for fish and chips wrapped in newspaper. I had my first hot dog at the silver jubilee party! I walked to school many times in several inches of snow! Also had to go in heavy wind - i once got blown right across the road on the way home for lunch. My school only closed once - during the general strike, cos there was no coal. No internet then and not everyone had a phone, so most of us turned up to a school with no teachers! Germolene was used to treat everything that epsom salts or andrews liver salts couldn't treat. My knees were always cut, many times with yellow pus oozing out! Dad would treat them with a soap and sugar poultice which i hated. We always used to get splinters then (or spelks as we called them) and Dad would torture me with a needle, trying to remove them! Goodness me, i'm still in my thirties! i sound like i lived through both wars! Happy memories, though! Sal |

Hi Yes we were more daring in though days, we used to play on the wreck which was really bombed damaged houses that were death traps, council pulled them down in the late 70,s and built a roundabout on them. We played in dirt , went to school in the snow, ate sweets and pop , nobody had ADH , had the cane if we were naughty , got a clip round the ear from our parents, went to bed when we were told to without tvs, game consules or dvds.Climbed trees , scrapped our knees and got the cut full of dirt. Fed cod liver oil , and ate our greens and fruit was a special treat on sundays with ideal milk. Were we deprived! I think not. Lorraine |

I was 15 and I went down to my sister's in Portsmouth for the week, so it must have been half-term. There was a street party in her road and everyone contributed to the food - can remember handing round sausage rolls. The weather was good I think, pretty hot, I was wearing a GHASTLY red, white and blue tank top!!! |

Brilliant, we had our street party, which was the first of many after that. Our first son was born in the May and he spent most of the day asleep in his pushchair (he slept most of the time when he wasn't eating) dressed in a little red white and blue outfit his mum made for him. |

I was 11 and just started high school-I remember getting a silver coin and fork-oh and that white mug. We had a street party and it was fab-I was in the girls guides too so we had lots of celebrations, was a great time. Infact I have my guide badge from 1977 commemorating the jubilee with the Queen's face on. catherine xx |

Hi Judith, It's those sorts of things you treasure - I've got an old shopping list of my Mam's that i treasure cos it's so her. I can't bear to throw out her old cooking books cos they're full of little notes about which recipes we all liked. Ann, i can remember how all the 'grown-ups' discussed entering Europe - and how eveyone thought it was a mistake! Lorraine, I too was allowed to go to the beach with my mates. I can remember being 11, lying all day in bright sunshine sunbathing, cos i thought that was what being grown-up was about. I woke up the next day in agony - i felt like i was on fire from the inside. the pain was unbearable and i had to be cut out of my nightie. It was the day of Princess Di's wedding and I sat watching it with cold cloths on my burns. When I think now of the danger we were in - we used to play on the cliff tops, in the war batteries, walk for miles, explore abandoned beaches, swim in the sea, all without adult supervision. It's amazing I'm still here! Sal |

I'm sure I was off school - think we had half term late that year to coincide with the jubilee. I remember rehearsing for ages because I was in the orchestra welcoming the Queen to Doncater racecourse on her jubilee tour. We had all been given the gen on how to address her etc. - all we saw of her was a fleeting glimpse in the distance. What a disappointment!! We had or own celebrations that day though as it was my parents Silver Wedding Anniversary - I remember they got a free silver dish from a local jeweller because it was the same day as the Jubilee.
