Well ok then - as long as these undercover people also secretly film drunks, and landlords who serve drunken people with yet more drink. And stalk people who look as though they are going to spit their chewing gum out on the pavement - and dog walkers whose dogs look as if they might, erm, perform, and people who look as if they might be shoplifters. Brilliant idea - I am thrilled my Council Tax is going up yet again to cover the cost of this. Let no expense be spared in getting the REAL criminals (the smokers) behind bars. OC

Just another thought about this, Does this mean that Tobacconists/Shopkeepers will be allowed to 'Sell Cigarettes 'and then be' Prosecuted' for Aiding and Abetting people to break the Law?. and will the snoopers be able to claim 'Expenses' for all the Booze they consume in the course of their undercover exploits?. Hal.

What a pity they haven't got an extra 29.5 million to give to the Police so they could do their jobs properly. There are enough uncaught criminals out there without trying to criminalise the rest of us for using products we can legally buy.

I sincerely hope smoking is banned in the smoking room at the houses of Parliament!! Allowing 'undercover' agents to take photo's or film people leaves the gate open for ANYONE to film ANYBODY and claim they are these agents - stalkers dream come true!! If the government can afford to train these people, why aren't there 'agents' patrolling the street filming/photographing people using a mobile phone whilst driving? What happened to the vehicle emissions law? Stand in any bus station and breathe in the carbon monoxide being belched out - then tell me smoking is more dangerous than that!! This is the thin edge of the wedge - god knows what they will do next in order to curb the rights of the citizen to get their way. Softly Softly. Takes me back to 1933.................. maggie

As we already have the ban here in Scotland I think it has worked really well, I haven't heard of anyone breaking it. I welcome the no smoking in pubs etc. As a rule most people have respected the law and it has become second nature to all. As for the law enforcers who are going to be employed What next, honestly!! what an utter waste of the tax payers money. I bet they will really be unpopular.
