I am very pleased for them as I was when someone on my husbands side of the family got us straight back to 1648 for his mothers side but I also have bought certificates and census, it was through a second cousin whom I found on the Suffolk surnames List. as for my family well I have given up because I can't get back any further than the 1881 census. Kathlyn Report 3 Mar 2007 13:45

On my 'working' tree 75% is in pencil, ie....not proven, it is only upgraded to pen when I have the certificate or church records. I have been very fortunate to have made contact with several distant rellies and we have used each others info. to check our findings. Oh for a very deep pocket containing £££££. I am in the process of doing a tree for a friend and have managed to get back to the early 1800s, BUT she is told....These findings are only a possible signpost. Kathlyn

It takes more than two hours to check a tree back to 1643 - you have to leave your computer and go to a Records Office for a start, having bought certs etc to prove yourself back to 1837. What is sad about this posting on Success is that a Newbie doesnt always realise how important it is to check for YOURSELF and it may be many years of wasted research before she realises it is rubbish - if, of course, it IS rubbish. But as a Newbie, she won't know how to check. OC

I didn't think it was rude either, it just bears out the fact that a quite a few 'genealogists' grab whatever they can online and assume it's correct. There's no substitute for 'proper' research, by all means grab whatever you can online but ALWAYS back it up with PROOF. Carol www*genealogyprinters*com

Ros I haven't found any Irish decendents yet, but I do have one that was born in Paris-France, but I don't know where to go to obtain a birth cert, but hey-ho another brick wall will one day crumble....fingers crossed.... lol Bev

Do you, I dont, I think Kathlyn is right in what she says.. I think what alot of people forget is that you need to verify every piece of information that another person gives you.. whats the point in having a family tree thats based on pure fiction, or worse solely IGI entries.. Oh and apparently im related to Anne Boleyn, I wont loose my head though.

I did not intend my comment to be rude Andrea, it was typed with tongue in cheek. Like Deborah, I and many others who choose to be tortured by this hobby spend hours on even the quickest of our finds. If you look at the initial thread that had a mmmmmm....... Kathlyn

I think the cynicism on this thread by Kathlyn is quite rude! It is possible, although you clearly think it isn't, to make a connection and discover you are related to a figure in history where there lies an abundance of information, freely available. How disheartening for a person reading this thread to feel their good fortune is not only disbelieved but mocked. Bragging lies or sharing joy? I know which one I prefer to believe. Andrea

I know most would think 'if only I could have some of that luck' not me I feel sorry for any one who has their tree handed to them on a plate like that, I have enjoyed the last 4+ years researching the highs and lows, but when you break down that brick wall, the feeling is so great that I am glad that I have experianced it. With the help of so many here I have managed to get back to the 1700's on some of my lines, but others I am stuck at the late 1800's, but then again I know I will get a buzz when I break down further brick walls.
