Hi i have heard that swans are a delicacy.I googled it and found this reported ; The reservoirs are close to the river and separate Enfield from Chingford. Both the borough of Waltham Forest, which includes Chingford, and the borough of Enfield house large numbers of refugees and asylum seekers, including people from Kosovo, Afghanistan, Poland, Turkey and Bangladesh. The police sources speak of an 'epidemic' of swan disappearances which is spreading across London. 'We have received reports that Eastern European males have been slaughtering and removing swans for food,' one said. 'It is an allegation that is being taken very seriously, because like any wild bird, swans are protected by law.' Under the Countryside Act and Rights of Way Act 2000, people who kill swans face a maximum £5,000 fine and/or six months in prison. The RSPCA's local inspector, Simon Osbourne, said there was no firm evidence to show why the swan population had plummeted, but confirmed that sinister activities had been observed. 'Some people have witnessed birds being speared and their bodies being carried away from the scene,' he said. The RSPCA's honorary secretary in Enfield, Margaret Marsden, said: 'It is so sad because they are such beautiful creatures that are part of our heritage.' Though rarely eaten for food in Britain now, the mute swan was once considered a delicacy and would be served at banquets by wealthy families. All wild swans are officially owned jointly by the Queen and two private swan companies, the Vintners and Dyers, who were granted ownership in the 15th century. Should add this was reported in ' 02 Tina

William, bring them to me and I'll strangle them for you! Think that air guns, pellet guns should be banned. They have no legitimate purpose whatsoever. Rosexxx

I am so glad that there are so many kind thoughtful people on this board. I did once harbour the wish to be an RSPCA inspector. But my feelings would lead me to strangle some of these monsters. Love Bill

Unfortunately Bill we now know that serial killers and other insane psychotic people usually started out by being cruel to animals so it dosent bode well for the world. I once saw a suggestion that children and people charged with cruelty should be registered in a database as it will be useful to catch up with them later. The other thing that is also seen in them apparently is deliberate firelighting It is not a normal childhood phase Regards Tania

That is so sad William, there seems to be so much cruelty in the world towards animals, and to humans too, the punishment never fits the crime, unfortunately. Trish xx

How awful. There have been items in our local newspaper recently about culling some of our swans, as there are too many on the river!

Roxanne Report 15 Mar 2007 22:09

Some humans are just not worthy to live on our beautiful planet, Infact the planet would be far better off without them. These people are not this way because their disturbed or mentally ill as some would have you believe, their simply evil. swans are beautiful graceful creatures,I can understand how it was trying to protect its family,Just Like any father/mother would protect its young. I can only say how sorry I am to every creature that suffers at the hands of mankind, sometimes Im so very ashamed to be human.
