speaking of DVD's I have just started watching Emma which I got from the library. it is a very old BBC version and I am sooo disappointed with it :-( Mr Knightley and Mr Elton are seriously ODD looking, Emma is not at all how I imagined her (she talks like the Queen!) and Miss Bates is VERY disappointing. May not even bother to watch the rest. Maz. XX |

Jeanette, please don't do that I watched the DVD of North and South and mentioned to my tutor that he was wrong, the girl did meet the character he was talking about again. He said, that might have been the case in the TV presentation, but the event never happened in the book!!! Boy oh boy did I feel silly ;-)) |

Just picked my copy of The Book Thief up from the library and it's the hardback which is a big book. It does look as though the print is quite big though! I remarked on the size of it to the librarian and she said she'd heard it was very good. I explained that I also had to wade through Wuthering Heights this month. Her suggestion was that I should order the dvd through the library and cheat! LOL |

Fun, Chummy and big-hearted' Classic (Modern): In Cold Blood - Truman Capote A classic story of crime and punishment! 1959 and the Clutter family brutally murdered, Capote is fascinated by this meaningless slaughter and l;ack of motive! sorry for the delay Chocolat - Joanne Harris Chocolate, intrigue and love - what more do you need from a book lol - after reading one of her books last month and realising she wrote this thought id suggest it. Its a battle against sin and the church - sin of course being chocolate. Interview with the Vampire - Anne Rice Taken from the back cover - In a darkened room a young man sits telling the macabre and eerie sotry of his life ....the story of a vampire, gifted with eternal life, cursed with an exquiste craving for human blood. Its not as gruesome as it sounds - the mix of emotions is fascinating. Struggling to come up with a classic this month -sorry |

I'm only going to put forward one suggestion this month. The Marsh King's Daughter by Elizabeth Chadwick Despite having signed the Magna Carta and made promises to mend his ways, there is still great dissatisfaction with King John's rule. Among the rebellious nobles is young Nicholas de Caen. While fighting John's troops, he is captured, but during the trip back to be questioned, the treacherous marshes cause trouble and Nicholas and King John's treasure are both lost. Nicholas is injured and ends up at a nunnery where he is nursed by Miriel of Wisbech. News of the lost treasure comes to them and the nuns realise the young man they are looking after probably knows something about this... Michelle |

Hi everyone - my suggestions are:- Saving Samantha by Samantha Weaver - A young woman's escape from childhood hell. Autobiographical account of a childhood dominated by neglect and abuse which led to severe depression. At 18 Samantha realised she must do something to prevent the cycles of depression repeating themselves and signed herself into a psychiatric hospital. The treatment and counselling enabled her to face the pain of her childhood - now at 26 she is able to lead a normal life, 'Her extraordinary and gripping personal story is a great testimony of courage. Samantha hopes that it will help to inspire other people living in a pesonal hell to free themselves and gain enough willpower and self esteem to live happier lives'. Three Ages of Woman - Sarah Willis. A story of love, forgiveness and hope following 3 generations of women in 1 extraordinary family. Jennifer wants ot tell her mum she's sorry for running away from home when she was a teenager but her mother now has Alzheimers and doesn't remember what Jennifer has done ... Jennifer is running out of time to unlock the secrets hidden in her memories and find out whether what went wrong betwen them can ever be put right. Kipps - HG Wells (Classic) - When Kipps left New Romney with a small yellow tin box, a still smaller portmanteau, a new umbrella and half a sixpence to become a draper he was a pathetic, penniless figure. But not for long - Art Kipps inherits a fortune. His comical attempts to adapt to a life of wealth are complicated by Helen Walsingham who concentrates on his social education and Mr Coote who appoints himself as financial adviser. Between the 2 Kipps seems bound to make a speedy riches to rags return journey Bye for now Kate |
