Dave, don't exit left just yet. Wot response ? I am quite serious about the written and spoken word and do correct my children or raise the odd eyebrow when they slip into colloquialisms. Only yesterday after proof reading my daughter's college work (she is working in a school teacher training) and suggesting amendments, her college tutor commented that seeing as the work had already been proof read by the school that she could not have the extra opportunity needed to resubmit ! Ah Ah Ah I thought. So I'm not fick after all, Joan x

Joan, was tempted to reply L O L but on this thread would not dare but would like to say your response did cause me to occasion rather raucous laughter prompt and with that (before I fall off my chair) will exit stage left ! Dave

(I wasn't going to comment on the brain hehehe) It does not contravene the Data Protection Act and in fact there are a number of initiatives currently going on line that do just that - send messages via SMS. In fact there are now moves afoot to do things like inform immigrants when their work visas etc are runing out via SMS. E-voting is also being trialled in a number of areas (about eight I think) which uses the same technology.

Tell me about it...as they say....I work with someone who 'borrows' money to a friend....many more who don't know the difference between 'their' and 'there' - 'here' and 'hear' ...and I could go on.....and what about 'estuary English'....if we aere able to 'fast forward' 20 years would we think we were in a foreign land....they say that language evolves...to me it is 'evolving' far too quickly

Hi Ros. It's a ridiculous idea to send such personal information through a text and I think it could breach the Data Protection Act. I work in a hospital and we cannot give details out over the phone and if we phone a mobile or an answer machine we cannot leave a message either, Joan

That's terrible Ros, what an awful idea!

maggiewinchester

maggiewinchester Report 23 Mar 2007 21:45

there's no need for 'text' language when there is predictive text!! I can't stand children who say 'aks' instead of the easier 'ask' and as for the 'should of' instead of 'should have' - well my question them is: 'Of you done your homework? You should of' maggie

Dave, excused only if the Shiraz is poured this way. Husband is out at a Sportsman's dinner and I am the taxi (or ambulance) when he is ready for home ! Must stay sober; so just a sniff for me. Joan x

We had a surgery meeting yesterday and the Practice Manager suggested sending out test results by text --I was not in agreement --what if you sent it to the wrong person? Old fashioned way by phone for me who doesn`t have a mobile! Ros

Brain, I put it down to being tired. I think you put one too many 'p's' in oooopps. Do you think we would spot the mistake if we wrote in mandarin ? Joan

gremelkin Report 23 Mar 2007 21:38

Joan and Errol, Quite right (am mortified now) but is an excess of Shiraz a viable excuse ? Dave

Libby that is a great example of technology taking over to the detriment of education and correctness.

Libby

Libby Report 23 Mar 2007 21:33

I'm in complete agreement. Same as telling the time - most children can only tell the time with a digital watch and are completely (oops. spelling ? !!) stumped when asked to tell the time with an analogue watch. Libby x
