As my friends here know my Dad (aged 97) decided to go into a nursing home last summer because, even with our support and carers calling 4 times a day, he felt unsafe at home. We were very lucky in the home we chose and he is as happy there as it is possible to be under the circumstances. Every Sunday afternoon our son joins us and we go to see Dad to spend the afternoon with him or take him for a jaunt. The Grange is very close to a country park so we have spent a lot of time there. It was a lovely day here yesterday so we had thought to take Dad to a National Trust house for tea and scones but he wanted to go over to the country park to see the bluebell woods. There are wheelchair trails in the park but not in the bluebell woods. Undaunted we set off like intrepid explorers in search of El Dorado. The bluebells were truly beautiful, thousands and thousands of them in ancient woodland like blue mist washing around the tree roots. Our path was not easy, there were fallen branches and roots which caused a few problems but OH and son managed to hump and crash the wheelchair through the obstacles. Dad kept saying, “I’ll get out for this bit”, but my menfolk were having none of that so Dad was jolted and bumped along the path and soon we were all laughing so much we had tears pouring down our faces. This attracted strange looks from the occasional group walking towards us, which only added to our hysteria. We emerged triumphant at the end of the woods and we parked Dad by a bench at the top of a hill with a wonderful view of the countryside. We recovered our equilibrium and spent a happy hour or so talking over shared memories of happy times together. It will be nine years on Wednesday since we lost Mum but I really feel as though she was with us in spirit yesterday laughing along with us. Gwynne |
