Ann I second that one!! I am one that does not particularly read all the classics that are suggested. So I would go for voting for 2 books and then leave the classics for those who love them. Maisie x

I have had another thought. I have noticed that the classics are not universally popular, and I am guilty myself of not always reading them. How about if we have three books to vote for each month of the ordinary books and run the classics entirely separately. i.e. Those who know they will read a classic to suggest one and vote for them, those who don't intend or want to read a classic to not join in. This all done on a separate thread? what do you think? Ann Glos

Thank you, I hope you realise I didn't put this up to get thanks, I actually enjoy doing it. For those who don't like reading the classics, that is not a problem, just ignore that choice, we all read for pleasure and nobody wants to read something that is not enjoyable to them. Personally I don't enjoy all classics and will often decide not to read one. I will bear in mind offers of help and if i am stuck I will send out an SOS. Ann Glos

Hi Ann, I too would like to thank you for your hard work! I have only been reading with you for a short while and am enjoying reading different things, even though I don't always get chance to read them all. The only thing I struggle with is the classics - knowing what to nominate and getting to grips with them! I am quite happy with the way things are if you are happy to carry on. Dawn x

Ann, I too am a relatively new member to this group. I am happy for the way that you have been running it and for you to carry on as long as you are happy about it. I go away quite a bit and, as I have said, I will fall in with what ever books are chosen whilst I'm away. If I am not back in time to read those then I can always tell you the ones that I have read on holiday. I don't always get around to reading the 3 books voted for but once again I am very pleased with what you do Ann and thanks very much for doing it. Love Maisie

Hi Ann As others have already said - thanks for all you do in organising us all. You do a great job. Although it isn't always easy to read 3 books in the time - especially if they are big ones - it is useful to have a list of at least 3 because some books can be difficult to get hold of. The date in advance works fine for me I usually remember and make a point of looking for the threads when they are due, although there are days when I don't get chance to look so it's useful to have 2 or 3 days to make suggestions, vote etc. I'm happy to accept choices made by others if I happen to be away or too busy to look. Fitting round your holidays has meant we often get a bit longer to read things which has also been helpful! I am very happy for you to keep running it more or less as it has been although if you got fed up of doing so perhaps others would be willing to take a turn sometimes - I wouldn't mind doing it every so often to help out but wouldn't want to do it every month. I'm sure others would also take a turn. Thanks once again Ann Kate

Hi Ann, I am quite new to the group and think like the others you do a great job running it. I dont mind the reading time to fit around holidays as its sometimes good to have a bit extra time to catch up on a book. I can not always get a book in time but its good to read what others say about them as I can then read it at a later date. xx Jill

Hi Ann I would also like to add my Thanks to you for organising Greaders! As work often means I can be away from home for a few days I sometimes don't get chance to get on here after catching up with all the house stuff so having 5 days would be very useful for me and also I really don't mind if I miss the vote going with what others have selected. I really enjoy being part of greaders and have read books I would never pick myself so as long as it continues I am happy with whatever format! Kaz x

Hear, hear Alfie! I'm in total agreement with you. And I would also like to say thank you to Ann for organising things. It can't be easy chasing us lot up! lol I am quite happy with things as they are, but that does not mean I am totally averse to change.....just not too much! I really must get off this fence before I get too many splinters! LOL Jeanette x

Hi Ann Five days before review date was what I was thinking of, you can always give people a date for the next review and ask for suggestions to be submitted from a date around a week before. It would also give us a chance to check up on availability of books in our areas, rather than vote for one, then realise it is not available Dee ;-))

Hi Ann, First of all I would like to take this opportunity to say a big 'Thank you' for the time and effort you put into organising 'Greaders' I am perfectly happy with the way it is being run and agree that as you are good enough to do this for us you should certainly not have to chase people for a reply. It is easy enough to use the 'search' facility when the message goes over the page/pages to find the latest communication. It is quite acceptable, I think for you to take advance suggestions/votes for people who are going to be away/ live outside the UK/ work shifts(myself). Again thank you for taking the time to do this. I am happy to have 'fluid' dates when you are on holiday. As I said above we can easily find communications from you should other committments prevent us accessing the message boards on a particular day. As to number of books suggested. I agree that with greater numbers of members we are having a lot of books to choose from, three sometimes being a lot to read, especially if they are long books. However I take the view that I will read two out of the three (particularly if one of them does not appeal to me) Have wittered on so long I have forgotten what else you asked, so will stop now. Again, thank you and best wishes, Alfie.

I presume that you are assuming then Dee that the review date will always be at the end of the month? Or did you not intend the post to always go up on the 25th but 5 days before the review date? So far dates have been fluid because of my holidays. However I realise I am only one person and Greaders can't be run for my benefit. If you go to fixed dates it might be necessary for somebody else who doesn't go away so much to take over the organising - which is OK by me. Ann Glos

Hi Ann I guess not everyone comes on to the site everyday so would it be an idea to ask for nominations, for example on the 25th with the date for voting to be on the day we review the books we have just read?? That gives people around a week to spot the thread and put books forward, and to organise their reviews Dee x

AnninGlos Report 23 Apr 2007 14:02

Greaders – a discussion We have a lot more members now and it occurs to me that those who have joined in the last year may feel they want a say in the way things are run. They may even feel that they want somebody else to organise Greaders. They MAY even feel they want to volunteer to organise it themselves. I would be interested to know what you think. Do you all agree that from now on we should set the date and time for a deadline for receiving book suggestions and subsequently votes without me having to chase anybody as I have up until now. And do you all agree that if you miss the deadline you are happy to go along with the choice that is the majority vote even though you may not have voted? If you know you are going to be away I am happy to take your suggestions before you go and place them on the thread in your name. Is everyone happy with the format of two ordinary and two classic books? Or would you prefer, one ordinary and one classic, no classic at all or even just one book of either sort? Instead of the suggestions and vote maybe you would prefer that we each suggest a book in turn. Over to you for your comments. Ann Glos
