Address and telephone number

Bodmin Gaol
Berrycoombe Road
Bodmin
Cornwall
PL31 2NR

T: 01208 76292

For instructions on how to find the place complete with maps, follow this link - http://www.bodminjail.org/other-articles/directions/

Just a thought that came to me - if you go to the Gaol website, you can view their menu. Please let me know what sandwiches you would like, and I can pre-order them for you. You will then all know the cost beforehand.

Is that a good idea?

Hi All,

Been away again for a few days, so not in contact with anybody.

Please can you all send me a cheque for the tour only, payable to Bodmin Gaol - £5 a head. If anybody hasn't got my address, please PM me.

I will be arranging for sandwiches before the tour, but those can be paid for on the day. It will be no more than £5 max. After the tour, the menu will be available for anybody who wants to order food. I can vouch for the quality of it all - eaten there are numerous occasions.

I'm really looking forward to meeting everybody. Fingers crossed that the weather is fine on the day.

If anybody else wants to join us, it's not too late. I'll put up directions for the Gaol as well in the next couple of days, complete with post code for the sat nav people, and telephone number for those who might get lost.

Hi All So far the definites I have for the meet are as follows Me & John Perranmaid (FTF) Jan & Rick Scattingdon (FTF) Mags & Phil (FTF) Marie C (FTF) Linda McD and husband (GR) Trish@Somerset & OH (FTF) Mavis by the Moor (FTF) Speedy (Bev) (FTF) Geordiegirl (Daphne) & Phil (FTF) Carol & Bob Butler (FTF) The following have expressed interest in coming, but have yet to confirm. Old Crone Holden (FTF) Sunny Rosy and Danny (FTF) Wayyone (GR) Georgina Casserly (GR) Barbara & OH(Teddy Bear) (FTF) If there is anybody left off the list, or anybody who wants to be added, please let me know. Re food, I've had another think. How woud it be if I got a selection of sandwiches arranged for lunchtime before the tour for about £5 a head. Anybody who then wants a meal later in the day can then order from the menu. Would that suit you all better? If you can let me know by Sunday, it would be good as we are going to the Gaol for my Mum's birthday, so I could chat with them then. As I've said before, they are very flexible, and will do food as we want. Any other suggestions appreciated, but I think we should eat something before the tour which starts at 2pm, and lasts for at least an hour. Think I might be chewing the table leg by 3 !! PP xx

Pauline, Thanks for the message. It sounds lovely, and such a lot of places to go and see.I went in the 40's with my parents, and although my mother knew her gran came from Cornwall, there was no mention then of finding anything out. We have been and stayed 2 nights on the way to the ferry for Santander, and I did find the cottage where my g.gran was born in Torpoint. My g.g.gran was born in St Martin in Looe Bay. G.g.g.gran in Duloe. Others in Hessenford,Tresmeer. They seemed to go back and fore over the border into Devon.A lot in Holsworthy,Broadwoodwidger, etc etc. The main name I have is Hortop, and they had a mill in 1700's at Tresmeer. I also have a convict on the 1st fleet to Australia and he lived at Beaworthy,Devon. He was James Hortop. I doubt very much whether I will be able to make it on 22nd.If it was just my o.h.and me it would be easy, but with the other 2 it could be a problem, and we are all in one car. I'll try and work on it????and let you know. Will probably try having a meal at the Gaol anyway. Thanks a lot Brenda

Hi Brenda, It would be lovely to see you there is you can possibly extend by a day. Will leave it to you. I know Lakeview well. In fact our elder daughter got married there last December - what a brilliant day we had then. I hope you enjoy your stay there. Re visiting the records office in Truro, it is a must for the parish records. You must book in advance though to ensure getting a fiche reader. They will do copies of any register entries you find - I think it's about 80p a copy. The parish registers are all there on fiche on a self serve basis. They hold a huge amount of other records as well, so it's worth searching their catalogue on-line before you come to see if there is anything else you may like to see. Places to go - there are so many of course. You already say you are going to Eden. That's great, and if you enjoy plants, then the Lost Gardens of Heligan is a must as well. It's not far from Mevagissey, and well worth looking at. Nearer to Bodmin there is Lanhydrock House and gardens - a National Trust place. Also if you like steam trains, there is the Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway in Bodmin itself. The food at Bodmin Gaol is excellent - we have eaten there on many occasions, and never had a bad meal. If you go to Truro, the cathedral there is worth a look around, and of course if you are a shopoholic, many of the major retail outlets are there as well in a relatively small area. A bit further afield is Falmouth. There is a lovely drive around, and places where you can park and enjoy an ice cream while taking in the scenery. The Roseland peninsula is also very pretty - St Just In Roseland Church has such a lovely setting. St Mawes as well. I could go on and on as Cornwall is my home county. I hope you have a lovely holiday in the Duchy. If I can help you with anything, let me know. PP xx PS Where are your ancestors from in Cornwall?

Hi Pauline, How I wish I could come to your meet!!!! I will be staying near Bodmin,at Lanivet (Lakeview Country Cottages)from 15th-22nd Sept, with my o.h.and daughter and s.i.l. The thing is we have a long way to travel back to North Wales, via Manchester, with dr.If we could stay another day I would be there, but I think she has to be back for work. I am hoping to do a little bit of searching whilst there,as I have a lot of rellies buried in Cornwall and Devon, but I don't want to spoil the holiday for the others. My s'i'l will be quite happy fishing in the 3 lakes they have there, and my O.h can scoot round the 180 acres on his mobility scooter,so,maybe daughter and myself can take ourselves off. Would love to meet you all.It may be worth a look round the Gaol though. We are definitely going to the Eden Project. Have any of you got any other ideas for places to go,and is it worth going to the records office in Truro for parish registers? Brenda

Re food for the meet, it seems that there are a few who don't want the arranged buffet. If you are coming to the meet, please can you let me know your preference - either order from the menu or I could arrange for a section of sandwiches. The Gaol are very accomodating, but I obviously need to know before so that they know as well. PP xx

Hi All, I can now confirm details of food and tour. It's looking less likely re having a speaker in the afternoon after eats, but I'm still working on that. Timing as follows. Arrive between 12.30 and 1pm. Vegetable soup and roll to be served. 2pm - conducted tour of the Gaol by the owner, Simon. That will take approximately 1 hour. 3ish - back for eats which will consist of a cold meat platter with new potatoes and three compound salads. Tea/coffee also included. If anybody is vegetarian, please let me know as they will accomodate accordingly. If anybody wants a desert, that can be ordered separately on the day. I'll keep you informed if there will be any talks after the food. The price for the tour is £5 per head, and all the food/tea and coffee will be £13.50 per head. I need to know final figures 1 week before the meet. Also I would like to know how you all feel about paying up front instead of on the day. If you are happy to do that, please PM me for my address. I must stress that it is not a requirement from the Gaol. I just thought it would make things flow better on the day. So far these are the people who have expressed an interest/confirmed their attendance. Me & John Perranmaid (FTF) Jan & Rick Scattingdon ? (FTF) Mags & Phil (FTF) Marie C (FTF) Linda McD and husband (GR)? Sunny Rosy and Danny (FTF) Trish@Somerset & OH (FTF) Mavis by the Moor (FTF) Speedy (Bev) (FTF). Geordiegirl (Daphne) & Phil (FTF) Old Crone Holden (GR) Carol & Bob Butler (FTF) Wayyone (GR)? Georgina Casserly (GR)? Jan the Cornish Pixie (GR)? If you want to be added to the list, please let me know. PP xx

We've found a cottage to rent for a week from the Friday via Bodmin tourist Info Board website so we won't have to travel down on the Saturday which will be a lot easier. Really looking forward to the meet and I can take some flowers to lay on my g g grandparents grave again which is at Charlestown. Daphne
