I've learnt something today then Marion, although come to think of it I guess I should have realised that was where the pudding got its name from Dee x

Thats where a 'clootie' dumpling gets it's name from, as it boiled in a 'clout' cloth. Not that I have ever made one. Marion

Thanks Dee, so clout is cloth then. Anne

Dee the Bibliomaniac Report 28 May 2007 12:16

Hi Anne, in the saying the word clout is a variation on cloth.Shakespeare refers to things being clouted, and they were things that were heavy and patched It has other meanings, as in power when a politician has clout and can also be used in archery to refer to a target I think they are implying that May can often turn cold at the end of the month, like it has this year, and that it is unwise to cast off winter clothes until June is here (sorry I sound as though I swallowed the dictionary) ;-))) Dee :-))

We used to go away quite a lot when my kids were young. hubby has the job of putting tent up and if it rains it's pretty horrible. I am hoping it will be good cause I have suggested that the two of pack up the car and head off to parts of Scotland we have never been to. If this weekend is wet...I have no chance of talking him round. Thermal drawers and wellies might be needed lol Marion
