I felt the floor shaking under my feet earlier this afternoon, but there was a lot of noise in the corridor outside my door so I thought it was something to do with that. Although it is a 3 storey concrete building, so I should have realised ......

it was an earthquake!

About 70 km north of Vancouver, measured at 5.1 by Earthquakes Canada, 4.8 by the US Geological Survey. For some he seismographs of the 2 countries often give different numbers :-S

No damage, no tsunamis, nothing fell off my shelves, so all OK ............. but might get aftershocks for several days. We've already apparently had at least 2, but I didn't feel those.

I remember this part of Kent had an earthquake a few years ago and although I was here, I felt a bit peeved that I had missed it. It did cause quite a bit of structural damage like loose brickwork and cracked gable ends of houses. Scaffolding was rather hard to get held of locally for a good few months, while it was all repaired.

Luckily, there seems to have been no damage and no injuries, just shaking.

It occurred in a very remote area in a mountainous area within a provincial park, no people living anywhere near. But it was only about 1 km below the surface and that is why it was felt over such a large area.

We do live in an earthquake-prone zone, with faults everywhere including continuations off the coast of the faults that cause major damage down south off California, etc.

For us, many of the earthquakes that do occur are usually below about a 3, and are rarely felt. It is unusual to actually feel one as strongly as this was.
